Did you read this wondering if this was a scandal story? Sorry, but it is exciting news…..Brooklyn has a huge floating swimming pool now called "Floating Pool Lady." It opened on July 4th- and I heard it was great from a parents yahoo group….has anybody been to it yet?
A little history: In 1900, NYC had as many as 15 of these "floating baths" along the East and Hudson Rivers- usually moored around the tenement districts so that the public could bathe and swim. (Yech! bathing AND swimming- Yech!) Apparently, none of that will be going on at the new one.
Now: The new pool is built within an existing decommissioned steel deck barge with locker rooms, bathrooms, showers, a spray pool and a snack bar. The pool has 7 lanes, 25 meters and can fit 174 people! (I definitely would not want to be in there with that many people- that’s like going to a concert).
Cost: FREE!
Hours:
Pool – 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Beach – 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
7 days a week
This is from their website:
Grab a burger, rent an umbrella and enjoy the spectacular views of New
York Harbor. Get your game on for pick-up beach volleyball and sand
soccer or contact MetroSoccer to sign up for leagues and clinics!
The Floating Pool Lady
has a maximum capacity of 175 persons. Swimmers will be issued colored
wristbands for hour-long swim sessions on a first-come, first-serve
basis. If you have to wait for a swim time, you can relax on Brooklyn
Bridge Park Beach. See pool rules below.
Where is it? In the future Brooklyn Bridge Park!
Between Piers 4 and 5 (near Furman and Joralemon Streets), two
blocks north of Atlantic Avenue. Mapquest: 334 Furman Street.
How do I get there? Subway: 2/3 or 4/5 to Brooklyn Boro Hall, walk straight down Joralemon Street to the waterfront.
Free Shuttle: Stops at Boro Hall (Joralemon Street) and High Street (Cadman Plaza West) subway stations.
Car: Limited parking ($20) available.
