I came upon this Brooklyn life coach’s site (www.bethanyrule.com) and did a little investigation. I had only learned about life coaching a month ago when my sister in Chicago said she had just been to one- so, I was curious to check a local one out.
The Brooklyn life coach, Bethany Rule, runs a weekly coaching class at PLAY in Brooklyn and had some sound, good articles on her website, so I contacted her about doing an initial evaluation with me so I could do a post about her for you. (oh, and um, maybe help me too.)
I filled out a questionnaire prior to our meeting so she had a good
sense of what I wanted to work on and what makes me tick.
When I got to our meeting, she asked me more questions- and difficult ones. I really had to think. She was a good
listener, repeating at times what I said, clarifying to me and her what
I was actually saying. She did this in a supportive, investigatory way. I felt
like she "got" me right away. She offered feedback and
encouragement, pushing me to create and satisfy
realistic goals for myself that would address my concerns of: juggling work/home,
developing a career, maintaining a career, helping me whittle out
things in my life, saying "no" and coping with financial strain. I sound like a mess don’t I?? Bethany was honest, empathetic, personable and helped me
to feel motivated and positive about changing things in my life. She followed up with a comprehensive write-up of what we had discussed, my goals and her final thoughts. It has been great to revisit over the last three weeks. If I
had the time (Ha!- so I *really* do need to see her), I would do a full
counseling program with her. She walks the line between therapy and
life coaching- and that combination worked well for me.
After our meeting, I asked Bethany if she could do a special for A CHILD GROWS IN BROOKLYN readers -and she agreed! Hooray- maybe I can do this after all!
