Adjusting Sleep for Time Zones
I found this article written by Barrie Gillies at www.goodyblog.com, a Parents Magazine blog and thought it was extremely helpful in dealing with jetlag. As I wrote elsewhere on this blog, we attempted our own method of time zone adjustment. It seemed to work to some extent, but I am always open to hearing other ideas. Parents Magazine sleep consultant has another tactic. This is from the article:
"I e-mailed Dr. Jodi Mindell, Parents’
sleep expert for some advice on helping little ones re-adjust their
clocks. I couldn’t put him to bed near his usual 8:30 bedtime (as I
said, it was closer to midnight before he’d go down) and I didn’t have
the heart to wake him in the morning so I let him sleep until he woke
up—11 or noon-ish—just figuring he’d somehow automatically get back on
his normal schedule. Turns out I should have woken him up as close to
his usual wake-up time as possible. Says Dr. Mindell: "The thing that
really drives what time a kid/person goes to bed at night is actually
what time he wakes up in the morning. So waking him up at his usual
time is the thing to do. You can make that change in leaps by waking
him at his usual time of 7 or 7:30, or you can do it really slowly by
15-30 minutes a day but that takes a long time. By waking him at his
usual time, he’ll be cranky for a day or two, but he’ll get back on
track quicker. You also want to shift his naps back to his usual time
too. Another thing is to expose him to morning light so get him outside
and into the sun in the morning." And it worked. I woke him up at 7:30,
took him outside; that day he napped closer to his usual nap time, went
down maybe 10ish then the very next night he was totally back on track.
Thanks Dr. Mindell!! So if you ever have jet lag problems (with
yourself or your kids) this works like a charm."
