Teething Solutions

Teething Solutions- an update. Today at my mom’s group we were talking about ways to help with teething. It doesn’t just affect a 6, 7 or 8 month old, but comes back again to bite them (ha!) at 14 or so months. So, we were discussing some solutions that have worked for us.  First, my old solution: Healthy Times biscuits for teethers. I still stand by this one.

Teething Biscuits
maplebiscuitslgAt a playdate today, my friend had these maple teething biscuits. I wasn’t keen on having my 7 month old try one at first, because he seems to bite everything and I thought he might bite into one and possibly choke.
But….I watched another baby (1 week younger) successfully slurp on his for a few minutes and decided to try one for Birch. He was in 7th heaven! He loved the maple flavor, and cried when I tried to take it away from him. Hmmmm….what is in those biscuits? Must say, they are super sloppy though- don’t put  your baby in anything you like if you give him one of these biscuits. Nontheless, they were the best! I just ordered another kind from Earth’s Best to compare…but here are the ones he loved; (and all 4 of the boys there loved them!) They are organic. Made by Healthy Times Baby Food. You can buy them at Fairway and most organic stores. UPDATE: Try the Vanilla flavor if you want less of a mess.

Camilia Teething Liquid
camilia_20dose_largeThis is probably my #1 solution now for teething: Boiron’s Camilia Teething Liquid. Basically, you snap off a single-dose from a tube and squeeze it into the baby’s mouth. Birch seems to really mellow out with it. (I have to admit sometimes I wonder if it is the placebo effect on ME though!) The main ingredient is Chamomilla. You can find this at Fairway and organic food stores. (Though I looked at ALL the Williamsburg organic stores and none of them carried it.)

Frozen Washcloth
An oldie but goodie. Take a wet washcloth, wrap it tight and put it in a ziploc bag in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Pull it out and give it to your little one. They can chew on it for quite awhile and get some relief. Word of caution: make sure there aren’t any loose threads and that you washed the cloth in babysafe or mild detergent.

Lily and Genevieve’s Frozen Cocktails

11020_1_2These two parents from my moms group have come up with some great ideas for their teethers. Lily takes a banana (you can use any fruit) and combines it with ice in her blender. She then fills the “Baby Safe Feeder” with her concoction and her child can chew on the mix through the feeder and get teething relief. Genevieve slices fruit (watermelon, peaches, anything) and puts it in the baby feeder. She then puts the feeder in the freezer for a 30 minute “cook” and voila! a cocktail for teethers. You can buy the feeders at most children’s shops and the big name box stores too.

Chamomile Tea Ice Cubes
Chamomile is a nerve tonic (see Camilia Teething Liquid above).Make Chamomile tea and pour it into an ice cube tray, then wrap an ice cube in a washcloth, bind it with a rubber band and your baby can suck on the ice cube through the washcloth: thereby getting the benefits.
