We had a total blast at The Yard- a funky setting in Carroll Gardens along the Gowanus Canal. The canal wasn’t as dirty as I thought it was- even up close- and apparently there are even fish swimming in it. We went to see AudraRox and Toxic Muffin. They were great. They rocked hard and Toxic Muffin (2 of Audra’s kids are in the band) had four great original tunes they played. They did a nice rendition of a Sting song too. Here is a photo of the kids in the audience rocking with the Muffins.
The Yard organizers made a few craft tables for the kids: one for making pet rocks, one for making noodle necklaces and the other for cutting, collaging and painting. The pet rocks were a huge hit and I thought I would post a photo so you can see ONE girl’s menagerie she made. (thanks Maya!) At any rate, this activity is super easy to do- find some rocks (or buy them at a craft store already packaged), lots of Elmers Glue, glitter, pom poms, funky confetti, google eyes and you have some cute critters.
Birch and I made a noodle necklace. Here is the photo of our necklace (hanging on an upside down cow).
The Yard organizers made such a colorful selection of noodles, I had to find the recipe of making the noodles for necklaces. Here it is from www.alphabet-soup.net.
Dye the noodles by putting 1/2" of rubbing alcohol and 20 or more drops of food coloring into a quart jar. Fill 2/3 full of noodles. Shake well, then spread the noodles on waxed paper to dry. You will also need string, tape (to tape the ends of the yarn to act like a needle for threading the noodles) and scissors.

The Yard is one of the coolest venues in Brooklyn!! It has such a calm vibe – perfect for crazy kids! Everyone should check it out……
Thanks for coming Karen
