I got 2 copies of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child for baby presents. I put them aside thinking I wouldn’t need the books for months and months. At 3 months I got into a panic: was I ever going to sleep again? I was glad to have it as a reference, along with the Baby Whisperer and Penelope Leach’s book. Honestly, I could barely understand a word of what Dr. Weissbluth wrote. I was sleep-deprived when I read it, but I knew I wasn’t that bad off! Dr. Wiessbluth is the most abtuse, circular writer. I checked with other friends and they felt the same way about his book. I called one of my friends who has him as her pediatrician in Chicago. She said, basically he gives you the theory and practical steps in his office and that the book is rather unhelpful and nondirective. I couldn’t agree more. So, I suspect that hearing him speak would be a much better experience: forget the book, go to the lecture. Sign up early. His lecture sells out every year!

  1. Here is my happy ending after having read Dr Weissbluth’s book and using his ideas.

Our grand daughter (9 months old) spent several nights at our house while her parents were on vacation. After a couple of nights of my unsuccessfully trying to get her to sleep with the usual techniques of reading books, rocking in a creaky rocking chair and singing lullabies (admittedly with not the best voice), I went to our local bookstore and found Dr Weissbluth’s book, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I read it over and over and saw the truth in it.

So I began Baby Sleep Boot Camp at the Butler house. I sat outside her door with the book in my lap, listening to the cries and sobs.It was truly a hard thing to do, listening to those wails; but I knew Dr Weissbluth was correct in his statements and I kept telling myself, “This is for her own good!” I sat and read certain passages over and over. I followed all his instructions. Finally, by the third night she went right to sleep. Ah, Sweet Dreams!
