Brooklyn dad, Leo, sent me an email with the subject heading, "More Stuff to Worry About!" Well, he was right. However, if you are not a worrier, than perhaps the following article will just give you something to think about.
Basically, they have finally found a link to food additives and hyperactivity. Remember all those anecdotes you heard about Red Dye #9? Well, turns out that those parents were on to something. If you are like me and LOVE licorice and gummy anything and don’t feel the effects of hyperactivity, don’t worry, but if you notice your children suddenly climbing the walls after eating the aforementioned, well, now you may know the source of the craziness.
This is from the NYTimes:
Common food additives and colorings can increase hyperactive
behavior in a broad range of children, a study being released today
found.
It was the first time researchers conclusively and
scientifically confirmed a link that had long been suspected by many
parents. Numerous support groups for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have for years recommended removing such ingredients from diets, although experts have continued to debate the evidence.
But
the new, carefully controlled study shows that some artificial
additives increase hyperactivity and decrease attention span in a wide
range of children, not just those for whom overactivity has been
diagnosed as a learning problem.
