A reader Amy wrote in asking about childproofing radiators. I have done a post on that here, but it reminded me that I didn’t do the follow-up post I promised on childproofing the pipes that Brooklyn apartments typically have. These heat pipes reach from floor to ceiling and are of varying thicknesses. Papa Tree took on the job of trying to find the solution to childproofing the pipes. He took a tour of Home Depot. He found fiberglass pipe insulation and it works beautifully. It is white, comes in various pipe sizes (1/2" to 3") and is shaped in a semi circle. It fits around your pipe with an adhesive lining so that it wraps around the pipe nicely.
I went and bought white artists’ tape at the Pratt Store to finish the look. Yes, sometimes I am a perfectionist about the most ridiculous things. I took the white tape that is the same white as the pipe insulation and ran it along the seam to hide it. As we stacked a couple of the pipe insulators on top of one another to make it IMPOSSIBLE for Birch to climb up to, I used the tape additionally to cover the seams between the two. It looks nice. And when Birch goes to touch it now and says, "hot, hot" he is pleasantly surprised to find that it is not. And we are too!
