Grey6Birch has taken the Sign-a-Song classes with us and we thought Andrea and Ted (the founders) were really fun. Plus we learned some signs.  Of course, we didn’t keep up with practicing at home unfortunately as I think it would have helped some of the frustration we have in communicating. Even so though Birch gives me a "milk" sign and "enough!"
Sign-a-Song is a musical introduction to sign language for babies, toddlers and their caregivers and begins classes January 12.  Classes
available in Park Slope (north & south), Cobble Hill and Clinton
Hill.  Schedule and registration information available at www.sign-a-song.com .  Or call 718-832-8060 or email andrea@sign-a-song.com
Free trials available anytime & no extra charge for twins.

Rickilake_water_birth
After a successful debut at the Tribeca Film Festival, THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN is being released in this month in NYC, LA and SF.  It will be available on Netflix in February.
Details on Film opening
NYC Opening: January 9-22 at the IFC Center.  Q&A with the filmmakers on January 9 following the 7pm show.
Special Bring Your Baby to the Movies Showings: Thursday, January 10 and Tuesday, January 15 at 11am.
Film Synopsis
Birth is a miracle, a rite of passage, a natural part of life.  But birth is also big business.  In the new documentary THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN Executive Producer Ricki Lake and Director Abby Epstein question the way American women have babies, and explore this fundamental question: should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potential medical emergency? THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN makes a compelling argument for more humanistic approaches to birth, challenging the ideals of our technocratic society which places absolute faith in machines and technology.  It is a must-see for anyone thinking of having a baby.

Covert
On Sunday, January 13
one of my favorite kids’ musicians, Ralph of Ralph’s World  will be playing at Joe’s Pub in the city. Having grown up in Chicago and hearing about Ralph Covert’s regular rocker band back then (The Bad Examples), I have a fond feeling for him. I think I am going to have to go to his concert and Audra’s/Deedle Deedle Dees on the same day! The time is 11 am, adults are $20 and children under 12 are $15.

AudradeedleAudra Rox and the Deedle Deedle Dees are partnering to do a benefit concert for Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn . The concert is on Sunday, January 13,
doors open at 3 pm and the show begins at 3:30 pm. They will rock the
Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope- a club that has plenty of room for wild
dancing and running.
You can buy tickets online here for $16 or pay $18 at the door. Or…. best price-$15 paper ticket can be purchased at:
Boing Boing at 6th and Union Street (Park Slope)
Ola Baby at 315 Court Street, near Sackett Street (Cobble Hill)
NY City Explorers at 388 Atlantic Ave (Boerum Hill)
Still Hip at 283 Grand Ave (Clinton Hill)
Birch, Papa Tree and I will definitely be there!

GetpicaspxMon-Fri  you can see the Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal.  The
New York Transit Museum puts on this train show at the Museum’s annex
in the Shuttle Passage. It features "O" gauge trains running on
separate loop tracks through a holiday scene with authentic sights and
sounds (new this year). On view until Jan. 13

Hts_hmblk1Daily (except Mondays) until Jan. 13th visit the Holiday Trains at the NY Botanical Gardens
in the Bronx. This is another event I have never managed to actually
do, but have always wanted to. It is free with garden admission. You
can watch the trains and trolleys chug beneath the boughs of a 30 foot
evergreen tree twinkling with lights, across bridges, through tunnels
and around NY landmark replicas and plant.  You can also participate in
the Gingerbread adventures- where kids use their senses to taste, smell
and touch the spices and other plant parts that make up a gingerbread
recipe. You can make spices, sachets, ornaments and decorate gingersnap
cookies. UPDATE: see my post about our trip here.

Snowglobe11
Also,
Friday, Saturday AND Sunday (and, really, until January 13),
is
the Crystal Winter Village at the New York Hall of Science. The Village features a giant snow globe, a motions simulator ride
across Arctic glaciers, a train display that applies the principles of
steam power, a puppet show (see site for times)  and a craft workshop
complete with table-top activities for kids of all ages.  Every Friday
through Sunday. And, for those of you looking to make a holiday card,
they have photo packages for families who want their photo in front of
the giant snow globe!  NYHall of Science info listed for the event
above.  PHOTO: This is NOT the snow globe you will see- but another giant one-
btw, the is a ballerina inside a snow globe- she performs- and yes, you
can rent the inflatable snow globe from $4500-5000. Doesn’t that sound
like a great party gag?) UPDATE: we went last weekend and
it was fun. All in all, the snowglobe is just a big piece of plastic
and my husband thought it was "cheeseville" but I thought the photos of
the kids in the globes were pretty fun. The winter village truly isn’t
much at all- just some snowflakes, the globe and an activity area. The
rest of the museum is great though. If you get there before 11 am it is
free. About 20 minutes drive from Fort Greene- less from Willamsburg.
