Antibacterial soap WITHOUT the bad stuff

TravelI learned about this product called Jao awhile back while visiting a Brooklyn store but had forgotten all about it until yesterday. Yesterday, Birch and I were at the very fun Mystic Aquarium for a day visit. Birch plunged one fist into the "feeling" pond to touch a crab, and then another to touch a "red star" (starfish), which was all fine since they had some antibacterial hands-free soap nearby to wash off with.  However, when Birch then decided to stroke the back of the dragon lizard (which he was NOT supposed to as he was under age 3), there was nothing to wash off with. This is when I thought of Jao. Jao is a portable hands cleanser.  Yes, there is Purell and diaper wipes do work also, but both make me feel like I am dousing Birch in fire fluid or something equally as bad.  So, this is where Jao comes in. Apparently, it is the first antibacterial water-free cleanser that doesn’t use the controverisal synthetic agent Triclosan. Jao contains alcohol instead which neutralizes germs. Why is Triclosan controversial? It is a
known marine pollutant
and has become controversial for its ability to give rise to bacteriathat can become resistant. For more on which bacteria it kills check their site product info here. I have never tried Jao, so I don’t know how it feels. I personally can’t stand the feel of Purell, so I am hopeful that Jao doesn’t have that similar residue feeling. Jao makes other products too (lip balm and moisturizer.) There are plenty of local stores that sell the Jao hand cleaner. For a total list check out their store list.
Two in Brooklyn are:
Artez’n Gifts and Crafts, 444 Atlantic Ave (Boerum Hill) 718-596-2649
Bark, 369 Atlantic Ave, 718-625-8997

  1. I’m confused. I thought the bad stuff was the “antibacterial” part in general. I keep reading about how kids are getting allergies because their environments are too clean. (Clearly the aquarium situation is a separate case). And that we should just be using regular soap as opposed to antibacterial soap. Is it that both kill germs but antibacterials have Triclosan. Is that right?

  2. Hi Karen,
I am ordering this Jao from their link. I tried drugstore.com and they did not have it. Also, did you notice that the drug store in Gladwyne carries it??? Love, Mom
