And so it happened yesterday:  the Brooklyn Flea Market that everyone has been talking about it.  Brooklyn Flea was created by Brownstoner – a website about real estate and renovation by a neighbor/father in Clinton Hill. Everyone I know has been so excited about it, that is, everyone except those of us that live on the surrounding blocks where it takes place.  In fact, it to so happens that the market is right outside my door. I pictured overflowing garbage, honking and double parked cars, dumped goods on the sidewalk and generally an overflow of people and traffic on our quiet blocks. And, yes, most of that happened. I got a dirty look and a "sheesh!" from a man clad in Gucci loafers as I tried to navigate Birch’s tricycle up a steep sidewalk ramp and we heard honking horns most of the day. So much for our Sunday naps for the rest of our lives.  Other than that it wasn’t my Yhst66281528035628_1995_7097657
worst fear realized. Actually, there was a lot to see and I saw a ton of families that enjoyed searching out a bargain.

I saw everything from the unique: mantle-sized tin-framed mirrors,
graphic onesies and receiving blankets, herb-planted Il_430xn21336901
glazed vases,
embroidered pillows and coverlets to the more typical flea market fare:
vintage clothing, mid-century furniture, glassware and jewelery. There
were two food booths: though I never got to see what they were selling
as the lines were oodles of people long! I gather that the same vendors
won’t be there every week as I asked one if she were back next
week…."no" was all she said.

The Brooklyn Flea market will go on every Sunday from 10-5 at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene. The school/flea market is located on Lafayette between Clermont Ave and Greene Aves. Oh, and please….don’t honk your horn if you come!

Here are some of the vendors’ items…..Prague Kolektiv’s chairs and Baby Goes Vintage wooden surfing toy.and Reiter8′s recycled sail bag.

  1. Been there, done that! LOL. Thank you for the info and for the website. Will NOT honk next time I am there.

  2. It was a fun day. Great steady stream of people. I only wish I wasn’t working so I could browse and shop!
Reiter8 will be back – check my web site for dates.
    Thanks for the mention!

  3. I’m glad it wasn’t as horrible as you expected. Hopefully more food vendors will take advantage of the “need.” Also, I’m sure people will space themselves out at time goes on. I avoided it because I guessed it would be a mob scene, so thanks for the update.
