Nyfamily_cover_2Birch and I are Cover Girls/Boys now! Neither of us can believe it, especially Birch.  He was startled to see his image in a magazine when I picked up a copy of "New York Family: Brooklyn" from a corner newsbox.  I was startled to see it there too as we rolled by on our way to dance class. Of course I knew the magazine was out, but it was quite another to find it unexpectedly in a newsbox near our home. Then I began to see it everywhere we went: LuLu’s when we went for a haircut, a Park Slope Restaurant when we stopped for juice and Corduroy Kid when we gazed at a pair of shoes in the window. It is a free magazine, so it is distributed to select stores and newsboxes and this issue will be out until the end of April.

The shoot was really fun. Even tired Papa Tree listed it as one of his favorite days. The magazine rented out FAO Shwartz for a few hours before the store opened. The shoot was on THAT blizzard day we had. It was a voyage to get into midtown from Fort Greene.  We started out to the subway in the stroller, but soon found we were making a snail’s progress. We all went back inside, put on gators (Birch was in Baby Legs) and then we backpacked with him into the city.  When we arrived at FAO people looked at us like we had sojourned from Alaska. The other Cover Girls/Boys for the "New York Family: Manhattan" magazine were to be shot the same day and had arrived in Bugaboos and suede coats. One of the other Cover Girl Moms told us we looked like a typical Brooklyn family. We took pride in that.

We all got to tear around FAO’s before opening hours. Birch and Papa Tree were about to jump out of their skins.  They clomped around on the walkable piano creating all kinds of discordant songs and then Papa Tree examined all the new Harry Potter displays while Birch tried hard to pull the nose off of the Lego Man. Good thing they use superglue!   Maybe you can see in the picture below that I am seated on a table of a glorious display of giant swirl lollipops, jelli beans and chocolates. I was sick with desire. Birch was seated on a polar rocking horse below, mouth wide open with glee from being able to climb on anything he wanted and being told that that was "cute".  He was in heaven!  I feel really lucky that I can say that I feel good about the interview in the magazine. I said nothing too embarrassing (at least not that they put in) and I think the writer really "got" me, the blog and why I love doing it. The writer (thanks Shannon!) also cleaned up all my "umms and ahhs" and made me sound somewhat together. Sure wish she could do that for me every day.  I have to admit, she had some good tough questions and made me really think.

One of my favorite things the Editor did was to let me write my "Favorite 10 Resources in Brooklyn". I list my favorite secret playground, all-around store, and places for parents to meet up.  It is way too long for me to post here, but you can pick up a copy of the magazine to get the list. I will do a workshop (Thursday, June 5th at 6:30 pm) at Bump Brooklyn maternity store on my "Favorite Resources in Brooklyn for Expectant Parents." I have started writing it and can’t believe it is already 19 pages long. Where is Shannon now??  I’ll keep you tuned about the details for that, but meanwhile, Thank You to NY Family for the opportunity for me to talk about the blog.

  1. congrats!! off to find a copy :) and read the list … good for you!

  2. Congratulations! I read the article and it really was a great interview. You gave us some real good information. It was a bit scary to find out that some dairy products that claim they are organic, like Horizon (which I’ve been using), are not truly at all. What an inspiring story about how your blog got started. A site only intended for friends to keep track of advice and look at you now, you’re such a valuable resource to so many parents in the community. Kudos to you!

  3. Congratulations I don’t know how you have time to do everything you do, but thank you your site is sooo helpful!

  4. Oh, my goodness, CONGRATULATIONS!! I’ll definitely pick up a copy soon. You truly have done such an incredible job reviewing and pooling together everything we need, and the attention is more than well deserved. Also (I know this is a little behind the curve, so to speak) congratulations on your pregnancy! You look fabulous in the pictures of you and Birch trying on different carriers.
