There has been a lot of discussion on the Yahoo groups about the proposed vaccination bill in the New York State Assembly. This bill, A10942, has new requirements for vaccines for health care workers and students at both the elementary, middle school and college level.  This bill has the potential to become law by the end
of session, June 25.

Some of the discussions and emails that have been going around have suggested that this new bill is mandating vaccinations for both children and adults in a very totalitarian way. However, some of the statements that have been set forth seem to be misguided. When I looked at the actual bill, it isn’t that simple. Some of it is about changing an age suggestion for 3 vaccinations (this point I agree with), about parental consent (this point I think has a lot of merit), and yes, the rest of it is about requiring vaccinations for children and adults.  This isn’t to say I agree with the bill, (in fact all but 2 points I think are a major setback for personal freedom) but I wanted to clarify the points of the bill out there as well as I could for people.  Anyone out there have some more thoughts or insight about this bill? I would love to hear what you think are the pros and cons of it.

(And before I go through the bill, if you are interested in not doing vaccinations or delaying vaccinations, there are sites that will help you figure out how to navigate how to claim either religious or philosophical exemption.)

Okay, so back to the bill.  Here are the major points of the bill:

A. Influenza Vaccination of Health Care Personnel
The bill imposes mandatory vaccination in long term care facilities. It should be noted that DOH anticipates changing its regulations applicable to hospitals, home care agencies, diagnostic and treatment facilities, and hospice programs to similarly require personnel in those settings to receive an annual influenza vaccination.

B. Vaccination against Meningococcal Disease
This bill requires meningococcal vaccine for all seventh graders and all studens entering college.

C. Timing of Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis Vaccinations

The bill proposes moving the requirement of these vaccinations to seventh grade from sixth grade.

D. Immunization Requirements for College Students
To require the immunization of all college students.

E. Future School Vaccination Requirements
Requiring immunizations to be given in accordance with the recommendations of federal experts.

F. Vaccines for Sexually Transmitted Infections

That vaccines to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be administered without
parental consent.  The bill changes the age for which parental consent is needed from 21 to 18.

  1. In my assessment, the most insidious part of this bill is the additional of vaccinations for sexually transmitted diseases with a dangerous, still-in-trial HPV virus vaccine, which has proved deadly, to children under 18 WITHOUT THE CONSENT OR EVEN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PARENTS. People I tell this to don’t believe it. That’s how stuff like this gets passed! No one believes it’s in there. How about we teach our children abstinence and safe sex and worry about their STDs on our own, thank you very much! The additional of this little beauty, tacked right at the end of the bill, is treasonous. NO ONE touches my kids without my knowledge or consent. So glad mine are almost grown. Sad for those with young girls if this bill gets passed.

  2. Also shocking is the pharmacy cuts that will go into effect July 1st. The impact on our neediest residents, those who rely on Medicaid and Epic, will be devastating. Unless New Yorkers speak up and voice their objections, there will be no options.

  3. Fascism has arrived in New York. It is outrageous that any government would force you to put something in your body that you didn’t want.
