I had a much needed prenatal massage last week. I went to a fairly new place in Brooklyn- the Everyday Athlete. I booked a one hour massage with Kunji Rey who specializes in prenatal massage for $115 . It seemed expensive to me so I compared other pricing for prenatal massage.
It is the same price as a prenatal massage at D’Mai Urban Spa in Park Slope.
Edamame Spa at Destination Maternity in Manhattan is $130 for 50 minutes- Edamame is more expensive.
Providence Day Spa has a prenatal massage that is $95 for 60 minutes- Providence is the least expensive.
Sage Spa in Park Slope is $110 for 60 minutes- virtually the same price.
So, all in all, it seemed the pricing was equal to the other spas around. I guess I haven’t had a massage in a long time! The Everyday Athlete is offering a great deal this summer (check out the bottom of this post for the deal) so that sweetens it a bit.
Okay, pricing aside, what was the massage and space like? When you walk in, you notice the all-wood interior- ceiling, floor, custom-made radiator covers, showers, etc. It feels warm and restive. The space is essentially a large exercise area with spa rooms in the back. It was completely quiet when I went in on a Thursday afternoon. The greeter couldn’t have been nicer and the whole atmosphere was laid-back. I felt like I was in Portland, Oregon or in the California mountains. The bathrooms reminded me of the west coast: natural stone and nice teak interiors with rain showerheads and good shampoos and conditioners with hair dryers available for those who shower after a workout or treatment.
I went into a spa room in the back which had a nice decor: it looked like West Elm had outfitted the room for a photo shoot. (see PHOTO above)
Kinja started me on the table with wedges placed all around my large pregnant belly and body and I was comfortable. She started with more pressure than I wanted but as soon as I mentioned that I was sensitive, she tempered her pressure immediately and I melted. I never think a prenatal massage is as satisfying as a massage when you aren’t pregnant because you don’t get all the deep work or the full body massage (your belly of course is off-limits), but this felt superb. After Kinja left I actually fell asleep on the table. It is a miracle I even woke up. Apparently, Kinja’s massage completely relaxed me. The comfortable and quiet environment didn’t hurt either.
The Everyday Athlete Studio is having a special right now. If you book now you can get 4 massages (or acupuncture) for $325 which is 30% off the regular price. This package runs until August 8th. You have to start the package by August 8th.
