Baby Wearing: Slings, Baby Bjorn and Carriers

Oh, joy! I get to try a sling again with this second baby. Birch hated slings and carriers when he was a little baby. He only tolerated the Bjorn a few times, and my back tolerated it even less. (Though I have to say the Bjorn I had was really old and it didn’t have the current back support the new one does).
My friend Christine came over with her 4 slings when Willow was 2 days old She showed me each one and then gave them all to me! Lucky girl, I am. However, since she left, I find that I am completely at a loss as to how to use the Maya wrap. And the Moby—-oy vey! It feels like I am fly fishing as I try and wrap myself and Willow in it. All this has led me to look into sling classes or sling help.
There are quite a few resources for baby wearing. Boing (the sister store of Boing Boing) has babywearing workshops every Tue 4-6 pm for $10.00. They demo carriers, and you can walk out with one that day. The woman who teaches it has been working with slings for 10 years.

There is also the Sling Library at http://slingsinthecity.com/ where you can check out all the slings available, try them and even borrow one for one week. Their website is completely opaque though, so I don’t even know where the sling library is…but use the contact form on their site to locate it. If you find out- please let me know! I want to go and check it out.
Lastly, Megan Davidson runs workshops out of a few local Brooklyn places and has a lot of carriers you can try. You can also bring your own and she will help you fit it to you and your baby properly. She also does home consults. To check out my private consult with Megan you can read this post.

PHOTO: I have seen Kerri Russell wearing this sling around our neighborhood and have been impressed with how easily she manages her sling. I didn’t take this photo of course, but I like it- she looks so happy carrying her baby.

Haya Brant also does sling fittings. She will come to your home and bring lots of slings for you to try out. She’s great.
There are also Slings in the City meetings. I think they meet once a month at the Yoga Center of Brooklyn on Smith & 9th streets. I went once and it was great.
Oh I was so not a sling wearer with #1, but #2 dug it. I liked the pouch slings from rockinbabyslings.com – no loops, no adjusting, no “omg the baby is going to fall out!” Even for a carrier-challenged mama like me.

Brooklyn Dojo on Pineapple Walk in downtown Brooklyn actually has a “Sling your Baby” exercise class.
There’s a “Toss your Toddler” class for parents with older kids.
