Sarah Sloboda is a local Brooklyn children’s photographer who just happens to be making a big splash right now. Sarah was listed as one of the best children’s photographers- along with another favorite of mine, Justine Cooper on Urban Baby. Her work has been featured in Disney’s Wondertime magazine, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Sephora (the company’s self-titled beauty book), Beach Blvd. Bride, Brio and Brio & Beyond
magazines. The Prix de la Photographie Paris [Px3] awarded her Top 2
Winner in the professional Portraiture category. So, it was with great excitement that I booked Sarah to photograph Birch this summer on the occasion of his first birthday.
Sarah came to our place and we headed out to our shared garden. Unfortunately, I am not a green thumb so you can see the dead trees in our backyard, as well as the overgrown weeds. I wish I had had a better location for the shoot, but nonetheless Sarah made it fun and went with the urban garden look. She helped me select Birch’s outfit and we headed out. Sadly, Birch was not in the best mood that day due to an early wakeup, but Sarah manged to get him to laugh and show off his gardening and swinging skills.
What was interesting to me was how Sarah didn’t program the session. She encouraged Birch to play. She shot him as he went about watering and digging and let him be and do what he wanted. Consequently, the shots she got were fresh, genuine and documentary in feel. When I look at them all, I think, "this is exactly what Birch is like." They will forever remind me of him, right then, at that very age. It is a storybook. It is the story of a precious, ephemeral time. I love that. I wish I could have her come and shoot every six months to remind me of our lives at that time.
I wanted to post some of the photos here so you all could see how great the photos are: full of cool energy, lightness and spontaneity.
Sarah was nice enough to offer readers a discount when you book her. It is a very good deal- thanks Sarah!
