This is probably one of the
coolest kids events of the summer/fall. I definitely would try to make
this if I had a child age 5 and up.
The
Lower East Side’s annual Howl! Festival offers special Howl! Kidz
activities over the weekend in Tompkins Square Park including Punk Rope
classes, Art Around the Park, Artist Alliance Inc’s wall painting and
sculpture classes, Musical IQ’s percussion workshops and musical craft
activities, Storyhowling tales, Hapi Face’s How to Haiku workshop, mask
making and hat decorating in honor of New Orleans, and more. The
festival’s stages brim with a full roster of performers including Robbi
K and Friends, BoyintheShade, Downtown Chamber Orchestra, Subhitters,
Poetman, and the Mayhem Poets‘ Slamchops, and nearby venues like the Bowery Poetry Club join in with the rockin’ Uncle Rock preceded by pre-show activities. Visit the website for a complete schedule of events.

Trapeze_act So, there is actually a county fair within reach of Brooklyn! Sounds
like one: petting zoo, circus, pony rides and more.  If this is your
thing, I would hightail it to Staten Island for the Richmond County
Fair.
This year’s annual fun-filled spectacular kicks off on Friday with a free family movie night screening of Looney Tunes: Back in Action
(PG), visits by Bugs Bunny and Tweety Bird costumed characters, and
carnival rides. The weekend continues with county fair contests,
crafts, exhibits, living history demonstrations, and children’s
activities. Highlights include Robinson’s Racing Pigs, pony rides, a
petting zoo, Skin & Bones Comedy Circus, appearances by Dora and
Diego costumed characters, and live music performances from
Beatlemania, SteveSongs, and more. Some rides and activities require an
additional fee, so bring extra cash.

On September 6, River To River will once again join forces with The
Drawing Center to present the third annual celebration of The Big Draw,

an all day event inspired by the wildly popular UK program of the same
name.  Each year, The Big Draw offers hands-on art projects that are
suitable for all ages and guaranteed to change the way we think about
drawing. Participants are invited to pick up a free sketchbook and let
their imaginations run wild as they engage in artist-led activities—no
experience necessary! Now in its seventh year, the Festival features a
wide range of music, dance, and visual arts events—all set at scenic
and celebrated locations south of Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan.
The River To River Festival runs through September. The Big Draw events
will be held in five fantastic Lower Manhattan venues including Battery
Park City Parks Conservancy’s Teardrop Park, Smithsonian’s National
Museum of the American Indian, South Street Seaport Museum’s Schooner
Pioneer, World Financial Center Plaza, and a New York Water Taxi. For
the first time at The Big Draw, the day will culminate with an evening
event onboard the South Street Seaport Museum’s Schooner Pioneer. While
enjoying a sailing excursion, participants will be challenged to
combine drawing and observation skills to solve a murder mystery. A
convenient Downtown Connection shuttle bus will offer quick and free
transport between The Big Draw venues.  For more information, please
