Its worth noting here that NYC approved window guards as mentioned above are ILLEGAL to install outside of NYC. Quite literally you can go to jail for installing a NYC approved window guard in other cities. The reason being, a reasonable person would know that by installing the NYC guard you've blocked a means of egress in case of a fire. Installing these window guards on every window, as is required compounds that fire hazard. We and several other organizations have been working for years to get NYC to amend its window guard law to require guards that can be removed in case of emergency. If you're not required by law to have a NYC window guard we recommend using a removable one. You can search for them online or contact us for pricing and installation for any type of guard.

Normally we recommend Guardian Angel window guards which I think are linked above. They make a great product that goes in front of the window rather than outside. In this way it protects the child from the window as well as the window from the child. If your son is like mine you know how valuable that is. They are made of a much nicer finish than the NYC guards as they're intended to be inside your home.

Another option entirely is to use window stops. These are devices that prevent your window from being opened more than four inches (you don't get more airflow with a window wide open than you do with it cracked four inches). Many of these are also removable in case of emergency and newer window frequently have this feature built in.

Window Guards: They Save Lives. They're the Law.
Window Guards (sometimes referred to as child guards) They Save Lives. They're the Law.
Every year, many children fall out of windows in New York City. Some die. Others are badly hurt. Even
falling from a first-floor window can kill a child! It can happen fast, to any child, even yours. Window Guards
can keep children from falling out of windows.
Window guards must by law be installed on your windows...
If you live in a building that has three or more apartments and a child 10 and under
lives in your apartment. Even if you live on the first floor, you must have window guards
if a child 10 and under lives with you. Every window in the apartment must have a window
guard except windows leading to fire escapes. In buildings with fire escapes , window guard
must be left off one window in each ground-floor apartment so that the window can be used
as and emergency exit. All public hallway windows must have window guards, too.
This Company:
www.BrooklynSecurityWindowGates.com
has been installing child window guards in New York City since 1983
The Brooklyn Security Window Gates Company could be reached at 718-755-3034

Children If a child 10 and under lives in your apartment, the law says:
•You must tell the landlord that children 10 and under live in your apartment.

• You must let the landlord come in to install window guards.

•You must not take down window guards once they are in.

• You must not make changes to window guards.

• You must not remove any part of a window guard.
