A Child Grows Event Picks

JUST FOR US!

Picture1
I am starting a new feature called "JUST FOR US!". Basically, it
is a date night suggestion.
This week’s suggestion comes via
Brooklynbased.net (if you don’t know this blog and you like to know what is
going on in Brooklyn you should visit it and subscribe to it- it is
really really good).  So their suggestion is for this Tuesday, Oct.
7th.  "Sunken Red," part of BAM’s Next Wave Festival. It is a one-man,
multimedia show adapted from Dutch writer Jeroen Brouwers’ chilling
memoir about his childhood in a Japanese prison camp, and BAM’s
offering two pairs of free tickets to the Tuesday and Thursday
performances. Want one? Just tell us the country the camp was in".
…at
Brooklynbased.net.

I found out about this event from BrooklynBased and I think it sounds pretty interesting.  I missed the DUMBO art fair (I was steaming out Willow’s lungs in the shower every couple of hours)- so I think I will go to these open studios to make up for it.  "Brooklyn Navy Yard Arts provides a rare public glimpse of their workplace Saturday beginning at noon, when the new artists and artisans collective hold open studios for its 35-plus members. Shuttle buses make it easy to access the free event, held in seven buildings inside the Navy Yard; exhibited work ranges from sculpture to paintings to photography and furniture design." It goes until 6 pm. 63 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY. Entry
to the Brooklyn Navy Yard at the Cumberland St. or Clinton Ave.

ScholasticbookfairIf you don’t have the time to trek into the Soho Scholastic Store- this is your golden moment! PS 29 (425 Henry Street, between Baltic and Kane Sts.), welcomes the community this Saturday, October 4th to the Scholastic Book Fair , for both kids and grownups. Saturday shopping hours are 8:30 AM-3:30 PM. Through the annual fair, PS 29 earns books for its library and money for its other literacy programs.
Also…PS 29 will be participating Atlantic Antic this Sunday, October 5th. This year, PS 29’s table will be in the heart of the action, on Atlantic Avenue between Smith and Hoyt Streets.

And Yes, Atlantic Antic is coming this weekend- Sunday, October 5th to be exact. Come see me at GUMBO and say "HI"- I will be handing out free balloons! GUMBO is at 493 Atlantic Avenue (bet. Nevins & Third)

At any rate, Atlantic Antic goes from 10-6 pm- rain or shin and I believe it will shine this weekend.  It stretches along 10 blocks on Atlantic from Hicks Street to 4th Ave. It is free. There will be 10 stages for live performance and tons of food. The New York Transit Museum’s 15th Annual Bus Festival will once again join and intersect with this year’s Atlantic Antic. Running perpendicular along Boerum Place, visitors can board and explore a collection of vintage buses dating as far back as 1917 and check out activities at the "Kid’s Stop" tent. Admission to the Museum, around the corner on Schermerhorn Street, will also be free between Noon and 5 p.m. For more information and an up-to-date schedule of activities and performances, please visit www.atlanticave.org.

Roosevelt Island has started a Kidfest this year. They are having live performances every Saturday in October from 2-4 pm. They also have facepainting, kids rides.  The concert is free and open to the public and the shows will go on rain or shine. This Saturday are the Deedle Deedle Dees. KidFest attendees can use their metro cards on both the F train to Roosevelt Island or Roosevelt Island’s trademark Tram. The performance venue at Riverwalk Commons is just steps from both the subway stop and the Tram. By the way the Commons has a large grass area to hang out on. It is always good to support your public schools when they do a fundraiser- who doesn’t need a cupcake? This one that PS 58 is putting on is a flea market.  You might find some good stuff.  It is happening this Saturday.  1/2 block from the Carroll stop F/G trains.

(for a review of Laura’s services you can see my post here).  And HappyBaby will be there with their food samples (personally, Birch loved the peas and the bean combo the most and I have been known to have a bit myself in a pinch).
