A Child Grows Event Picks

This place, The Yard,
is a little dear to my heart because it was at their event that Birch
made me a macaroni necklace. The Yard seems to put on fun events that
feel down and gritty (in a good way) and just a plain blast. They are
having their 2nd Annual Gowanus Harvest Festival this Saturday October 11th, 2008. Last
year, over 1,000 people came so be prepared to see some people as you
ride a pony, do some arts and crafts (macaroni necklaces?), carve
pumpkins, race in a potato sack, get your face painted, check out a pie
bake-off, learn about composting and enter raffles.. All proceeds from
the Gowanus Harvest Festival will be donated to Just Food. 11am-9pm
$12, Children under 5 *FREE* advanced tickets available at www.TheYard.ws The Yard // 388-400 Carroll St btw Bond and Nevins

On my long list of things to do this weekend is to take Birch to the first real Halloween event of the season: Boo at the Zoo
this Saturday, Oct. 11th. Don’t worry if you miss this weekend, it will go on from October 11–13, 18–19 & 25–26. The Bronx Zoo – “Boo at the Zoo”. Activities (from 11am to 4pm) include: face painting, pumpkin carving, clowns, hayrides, costume parade, crafts and magic shows. Please tell me your kids will be dressing up too….I am dying to get Birch in this great Unicorn costume I found at Still Hip.

The Irondale Center is having an open house this Saturday, October 11th beginning at 1:00. Wondering why this is an event pick? Because the new theater is now located in a new space in the Lafayette Church. I can’t wait to see what kind of space they made in that enormous, dramatic area of the church. I have always loved that space. So just for that alone I would like to go. But, I would also go to see performances by Lava and Irondale itself doing Peter Pan (at least a sneak preview of it). There will also be a potluck with restaurants from the neighborhood AND Brooklyn beer. Mmmmm. Irondale is at the Lafayette Avenue Church at 85 South Oxford Street. For more information call 718-488-9233 or visit www.irondale.org

Roosevelt Island has started a Kidfest this year. They
are having live performances every Saturday in October from 2-4 pm.
They also have facepainting, kids rides. The concert is free and open
to the public and the shows will go on rain or shine. This Saturday are Broadway Babes. KidFest
attendees can use their metro cards on both the F train to Roosevelt
Island or Roosevelt Island’s trademark Tram. The performance venue at
Riverwalk Commons is just steps from both the subway stop and the Tram.
By the way the Commons has a large grass area to hang out on. For more
information go to www.rooseveltislandkidfest.com

Bethany, who blogs on www.sanemoms.com wrote to tell me about this documentary, “Who Does She Think She Is?”, that is coming out that she thinks will be interesting and really good: as she said, I “think that all moms, artists or not, could benefit from it.” It is about how women feel like they need to choose between mothering or working. Bethany says,” It’s opening in NYC October 17th at the Angelika! Details are here … it won’t be there for long, and I hope to see you there!.”\
If
you are thinking about starting your baby on solids, this class might
be for you. Laura Fischer-Harbage of Maitri Health will teach you about
nutrition and how to make baby food. (for a review of Laura’s services you can see my post here). And HappyBaby
will be there with their food samples (personally, Birch loved the peas
and the bean combo the most and I have been known to have a bit myself
in a pinch). They will also have a raffle of a case of their food. The
event is Saturday, Oct. 18th from 4-5:30 pm at Get Fresh in Park Slope. $25 for one and $45 for a couple. To pay visit www.babybitesbrooklyn.com
