Thanks to www.mommypoppins.com- I just got word that the DOE has 6,000 pre-K spots that are vacant this year and is scrambling to fill them by October 31st.  This includes spots in Park Slope’s PS 282 and other coveted NYC schools.  For full information check out mommypoppins post. Here is a short bit from her post:

The DOE has left 6000 Pre-K spots vacant this school year and is now
scrambling to fill them. With a deadline of October 31st, the city is
urging parents to apply for these free public Pre-K spots still
available at some of NYC’s top public schools. We’ve got the inside
scoop on what’s going on and how to get one of these free Pre-K spots.

Here’s the bad news: Many of the spots at the most
desirable schools are for half-day pre-k programs, which means you need
to have some other child-care for the rest of the day.

Here’s the good news:

There are lots of full day programs with spots available too.

There are spots at some of NYC’s most desirable public elementary
schools, like PS 3 and PS 40 in coveted District 2 and many others all
over New York.

Nabbing a spot in, even a half-day pre-k program, means you’ve got a
spot for K. So if you don’t live in the zone or district for a good
school, but can grab one of these pre-K spots, you are in for
elementary.

It’s free Pre-K. Even half a day, five days a week is more than you get at a lot of private pre-K programs.

  1. The pre-k admission process is very frustrating! We applied first and second round for our 4 year old daughter and did not get a seat. We applied to all district 15 schools and are zoned for PS 321. Due to limited space I knew we would not get a spot there but tried for all surrounding schools. We are on a few waiting lists, including one at PS 133 on 4th avenue and 8th st. This school seems to be a gem, a school that has come a long way since the very ambitious and well respected principal has taken over. The scores for the school are good, they follow the same curriculum as the District 15 schools and they provide a friendly comfortable environment. Word is, they might be opening up an additional pre-k class which could provide spots for many district 15 children from the park slope neighborhood. One respected district 15 principal said all it would take is a few pioneers to change that schools demographics and more parents should be open minded about it. All reviews are positive and enthusiastic from parents, teachers and the children themselves. If they do
Open another class here and my daughter gets a spot, I think we will attend. Go ahead down and get your kids on the list and let’s take advantage of this recommended school!

  2. I need a list or a link to pre-k schools that integrate learning with music and arts that
    A) won’t cost me college savings B)offers full day programs/school. The public school option is on the table. My daughter is 3 will be 4 in July and has the option of staying in the daycare she is in now but I know we need greener pastures!

    Thanks and Happy Holidays!
