Sadly it has been confirmed that the beloved Berkeley Carroll Child Care Center is closing. Apparently, Methodist Hospital is reclaiming the building as it has with other buildings nearby. Many parents are without an option for next year, and scrambling. It seems the school/daycare crunch is only getting worse.

So, to that end, I wanted to alert you to three places that have new programs or are new(ish).

1. Greene Hill School[email protected]
213 Taaffe Place, Suite 110, Brooklyn, NY 11205.

Greene Hill School, a new progressive, independent school in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill opened this fall. I missed their big meeting this week (DRAT!) but heard that people were impressed and liked the directors. (One is a former elementary school teacher who now teaches in the Education Dept of 2 colleges and the other was the Education Director at the American Folk Art Museum). They have 4/5s now, and will be adding a grade every year. In September, 2009 they plan to have a program spanning ages 4-6 (kindergarten and 1st grade)

2. Mangos Place Day Care

One of my friends, Nathalie, just started her daughter there after Irving Place Daycare closed down. She said she really like Mangos- and even better than Irving. Here is her review:

I really find it a great place, the staff is very caring and so excited to see the children in the morning and the place so welcoming. The place opened in september and even though there were tears during the first week for some of the kids they were quickly replaced by big smiles. All the parents and children are really happy at Mango, there is a nice atmosphere and a lot of FUN. Maria negron the education director is a teacher in a public school. For 2 days/week from 8.45am to 3.15pm the price is 400 dollars/month

4. Brooklyn Brownstone School

272 MacDonough St at Lewis Ave.
Brooklyn, NY (Bed-Sty)
We share a building with MS35.
The Brooklyn Brownstone School was founded by parents in Bedford-Stuyvesant. They are currently registering kindergarten students. They will add one grade per year until they are a Pre-K-5 institution. Open to all NYC residents. Their video on their homepage is really informative. A lot of dedicated parents helped put this school in place.
