What is the Broadway show?
My suggestion for date night this week is a hilarious play: The 39 Steps. Does the title sound familiar? It might as it has the same title as a 1939 Hitchcock movie. Like the movie, this play is a dark comedy. And laugh we did. A fellow mom and I went and we roared and giggled. Four cast members play so many characters fluidly that you swear there are at least eight members in the cast. I had forgotten what good acting was after seeing a few mediocre plays this summer. The set design is minimal with innovative use of props to make you feel like the set changes are really quite large. What is truly fantastic is the choreography and stagecraft. The use of moving in and out of a door, cross-dressing and miming are put to use to create a sense of movement, place and character change. It won 2 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for a reason.
My friend and I loved it. We thought it was fun and a great night out full of laughing. The reviewers at The New York Times and Time Out New York agreed with us- (phew!)

Our pediatrician Maryann Tholany of Tribeca Pediatrics in Boerum Hill is the kindest, nicest Doctor I have ever met in any of the fields of medicine. I think she is totally suited to her profession because she is so kind and gentle with the children and the worn out parents which meant a lot to me when I was sleep deprived and swimming with hormones. She was also a life saver when one of my 4 week old twins nearly died last year from RSV. I can’t say enough nice things about her. We don’t have a dentist yet so can’t comment on that one. Happy HOlidays etc
We love Dr. Marina from Gabriel Pediatrics in Bay Ridge. She is great with children, and very patiently answers all my questions to reassure me even if they are so off beat.
My family dentist is located in West Chester, PA, and we’ve been going there for about 3 years or so. They have this new way for filling cavaties, its a laser process. No Novacaine needles are needed, and the laser zaps the decayed portion of the tooth quickly and painlessly. I hate novacaine needles, so this was a big relief for us, when we did get cavaties.
My pediatricion growing up was great. He was very kind and patient, which are great qualities in a doctor for frightened kids
We see Dr. Stephen Ajl at the Brooklyn Hospital. I think he is wonderful. While he is not the warm and fuzzy, hold your hand kind of doctor, I find him to be exceptional. (He is very sweet, but I would say his style takes getting used to.) He always returns my calls right away, fits us in for appointments whenever we need them (he’s a one man show who answers his cell phone directly) and, most importantly has always been right about what’s wrong or not wrong with our daughter. Our whole family (uncles, grandparents, etc) have met him and all agree that he is wonderful. I will say that going to the Brooklyn Hospital for an appointment is not always the most pleasant experience- but otherwise we are very happy.
Our dentist is Dr. Terry Unchali, who is on Clinton Ave between Willoughby and Myrtle. I really like him as well- his office is very clean, and I am really glad that I found him. I’ve never had to wait for an appointment in his office. He never rushes me and gladly explains every little thing to me in great detail for as long as I need. I’ve called him many times as well and he’s always been really helpful and quick to return my calls. I believe he sees children as well.
After the LICH pediatric office at Grand Army Plaza closed more than a year ago, we were so lucky to come across Dr. Amena Sultana, who is in the medical offices on Greene Ave near Adelphi. While she might not work quite hard enough to gain a patient’s approval and trust, she always takes her time, encourages questions from parents, and follows an open, non-alarmist approach to medical situations. She also has Saturday hours and does not overbook.
I love Dr. Santilli at Brook Island Pediatrics. The practice has a DR. in the office everyday of the week and even has a parking lot for patients. When you take your child for their first visir, you get the home phone number of every doctor and are given hours when you can call for non-emergencies, and you are told to call anytime with an emergency.
I love my dentist, Dr. Graffeo. Unfortunately, he is not in Brooklyn. However, his Manhattan office is pretty easy to get to – it’s in Rockefeller Center Plaza. He’s thorough, nice, and has high-tech dental tools such as electronic Xrays (so he can instantly see them)! Best part: He has angled a mirror at the window, so you can watch the skaters in Rockefeller Center as your teeth get worked on!
