This is just the top of my very long list of my New Years Resolutions:
1. Be in bed by 11 pm
2. Learn to accept criticism (arghhh!)
3. Read a book every night for at least 20 minutes
4. Start exercising!!!!
Does #4 look like one on your list? If that’s the case, this giveaway is for you. First, you can do it (I know I need this pep talk)! Even better though, do it with the help of The Fitness Collective of Park Slope and Cobble Hill and their amazing giveaway this week. You can win an 8 week session class of Mom and Baby Fitness (valued at $135)! You will strengthen, tone, and sweat with or without your baby and see the pounds slip off and that belly shrink. If you want to, you can also use their childcare program (currently only offered at the Cobble Hill location, but with enough interest they would start it at Park Slope as well) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-3 when parents can work out with one of their trainers, while your child plays supervised in their studio. Sound enticing?
How do I enter?
Okay, since we are talking about getting in shape here, I think we can’t do this without talking about food. Tell me your favorite place to get a bite with your family and why (is it a favorite food, service or atmosphere)? Don’t forget to tell me the name of the place! Post your entry in the comments below this post. Your entry might even make it on the resource list of Family Friendly Eats.
What do I win?
You will win a 1 day a week, 8 week session. If you want to do more, they can upgrade you for the difference. And, if you don’t win, you can sign up anyway. The classes are filling up fast- so don’t be too slow to act on that New Years Resolution. Here is what you win:

The Union Smith Cafe on (you guessed it) Union and Smith is so great for families and babies of all ages… it’s roomy and never overly-crowded, has an eclectic but basic menu with decent prices, cheerful waiters and bartenders who are always incredibly accommodating, and as a bonus it has a lovely outdoor seating area in nice weather with live low-key music occasionally. It’s not upscale like some of the other places in Carroll Gardens, but its not diner food either.
My husband and my 6 month old and I have been going there since our baby was just three weeks old. We’d prop him up in the car seat at the booths. Now he’s nearly old enough for the high-chairs!
Oh, AND they have a roomy and clean bathroom for diaper changes on the main level… no flip-down diaper station but heck you can’t have everything.
I love mamalus in williamsburgh. I would reccomend it to any parent for good, organic food for you and your kids. For $5.00 per child, the kids can play in the playplace while you enjoy good food and they do as well. great place for good food, play and relaxed atmosphere.
Hi! I have two kids and had two c-sections so am in desperate need of working out!
As for favorite restaurant, we just tried Buttermilk Channel in the evening and we will definitely be back with kids. They were friendly and even had a kid menu! As for our go-to restaurant, we hit the new diner on Court at Sackett called Coffee Shop a lot on the weekends now.
I think I may be too late but will tell you our favorite places anyway-
we love Black Iris and Rice, both in Fort Greene on Dekalb Avenue. Both of these restaurants are fast, very very child friendly, fresh and delicious! They also have many healthy options that our daughter loves, such as hummus, edamame, rice balls, grilled chicken, etc. A refreshing alternative to the usual chicken finger/fries kids menus!
We really like Pita on Atlantic and Bond. They are very friendly and quick. They have a garden in the summer too. And the food is sooo good!
We are a big fan of the delicious, informal and recession proof Nicky’s Vietnamese Sandwiches on Atlantic and Smith. We just love the owner Quinny who is so lovely to the many children who come here. You can bring your stroller in (down one small step) and there is one high chair there. We keep begging her to open up in Fort Greene – sometimes I want something ethnic that is not unimaginative diner food. Nicky’s hits the spot!
My FAVORITE is their classic banh mih sandwich which consists of vietnamese paté, ham, ground pork, pickled carrot, cucumbers, cilantro, jalapeno, covered with a generous spread of mayo on a baguette. Try the sardine sandwich too! Also they make gorgeous summer rolls and hot beef pho which hits the spot on a cold winter day. But my favorite thing is their iced vietnamese coffee which I down after a sleepless night with the baby! In the summer, try their lychee shakes.
You know, I haven’t had one bad experience in Fort Greene dining with my son, who is now 8 months old. Hats off to the whole ‘hood, but I have two entries for favorites:
1.) Black Iris is super! The food is always excellent, the staff are incredibly friendly and they love the little ones! My positive experiences at Black Iris have included nursing mid-meal on several occasions, eating standing up to prolong a nap in the sling (no funny looks, just understanding nods), and a patron who was dining alone offering to move from a large table to a smaller one so we wouldn’t have to wait.
2.)I love Olea for brunch with baby. The food is always great and the staff are friendly and considerate of parent/baby needs. One of my favorite visits was when I was 8mo pregnant and there were 5 babies and three toddlers dining at the same time! (4 different parties!) It was a great inspiration for my post-partum gastronomical fulfillment!
Cheers!

I just moved from Brooklyn Heights to Park Slope South – and I am STILL looking for a diner that can accommodate my big double stroller with my twins!
What we miss is one of our favorite diners in Brooklyn Heights – the Park Plaza Diner. Situated across the street from Cadman Plaza Park on Cadman Plaza West, this diner is fantastic for a large group of people, or parents with kids. Not only do they have ample space to “park” our stroller close to our seat, but they are always so good and patient with our kids. With high chairs, plastic cups with lids and straws for kids, and a changing table in the ladies’ room, the facilities are really the best for people with kids. The food is just what you want from a typical diner. My 5-year-old niece claimed it to be the “best grilled cheese” she’s ever had. Good burgers and fries, great omelettes, and a huge menu in general.
Oh – and if you own a car, you can drive there – I believe there is parking.
Sometimes my family and I head out to Long Island (Syosset) to visit other family members and instead of cooking we all get in the car and head to Ruby Tuesdays (in the Broadway Mall in Hicksville). It is an affordable kid friendly environment, it is also in the mall so we can get up and walk around afterwards and try not to spend money. The food is good and they even have a lower calorie menu and I do have to tell you, when we are there, almost every waiter comes over to say hello to Kaelyn and she loves it! Sometimes I feel like she is as much the highlight of their day as she is mine!
I enter every week! I hope I win this one because I could use all the help I could get!

PS: Karen, thanks again for all you do for us! Even though you probably don’t hear it often!
Our favorite family restaurant is the General Greene in Fort Greene. First of all the food is amazing! Our favorite dish is the roasted cauliflower. Second our 7 month old daughter loves it because she can sit in the high chairs they provide. They also seem to have a strategy of seating all the children/babies in the back so we don’t feel like we are inconviencing anyone!
Our favorite place in the neighborhood is *Boca Lupo* (Henry @ Warren). During daytime and into early evening they’re always full of families and very relaxed about baby chatter. They have booster chairs aplenty and a short but yummy kids menu. Also, for a small-ish place they have a lot of room for strollers.
Down the road is Hibino, a fantastic japanese restaurant (Henry @ Pacific). They’re quite kid friendly too, but more pricey overall. They taught us how to connect chop sticks with paper and rubber band into a pair of makeshift toddler chopsticks.
And … boy, do i need a fitness kick start!
To echo another posted, we also really like Graziella’s in Clinton Hill on Vanderbilt.
They are particularly accommodating for LARGE crowds of kids. Our parents group had a party there – more than a dozen 1-year olds and their folks – and they handled it well.
Every time we’ve gone we’ve been impressed by their service and friendliness.
We really enjoy going to Bubbys in DUMBO. The staff is friendly and there is plenty of stroller parking, both at tables and out near the hostess desk. Brunch is really good and the Brooklyn Bridge Park is right there, complete with playground. Perfect for an after brunch stroll!
This is exactly the kick start I need! My favorite family friendly restaurant is Helios on the corner of St. Mark’s and Sixth Avenue. My family and I have been going there since my son was a newborn..and now we bring our 3 yo and 1 yo, and they love yummy pitas, hummus and chicken. Living in Prospect Heights, we also frequent Cheryl’s Global Soul on Lincoln Pl.(they are very accommodating with children), which has a great brunch, lunch and dinner. Hope this helps!
A family friendly place? Without question that would be Johnny Mack’s on 8th avenue and 12th Street in Park Slope. I had been going there since I was a teenager and still bring my 20 month old daughter. The food is standard American fare with daily specials ranging from mussels to great steaks. The front area is mainly for the singles and sports fans but the back area has a pool table, video games, and a pinball machine. The staff is super-cool with kids and the children’s menu is varied (I always substitute the fries for the veggie of the day:)
Buen Provecho!
We were amazed by the family friendly service at Blue Ribbon Brasserie on 5th Ave. Not only were they friendly to baby, they graciously replaced every spoon she threw on the floor. The food was delicious. We’ll definitely go again when we want a grown up dinner but don’t want to pay a babysitter.
There are 2 places I really enjoy in Brooklyn. I really like the Avenue U Diner up the block from Kings Plaza. Though it is always busy, you never wait more than 5 or 10 minutes and the owners and wait staff are really great. I find it family friendly.
For date night, my husband and I are big fans of Michael’s on Avenue R and Nostrand. The ambiance is nice without being pretentious, they have a piano bar with the occassional sax accompaniment, great Italian food and great service. The owners are wonderful and treat you like they have known you for years. There is a nice wine selection as well and this place won’t break the bank.
The best part about both spots is that they have parking lots.
Happy Eats.

Bar Toto in Park Slope at 11th Street/6th Avenue is GREAT with kids and adults, especially if you can swing an early seating in the winter when the outside space isn’t an option. From quick upfront/sitdown orders for kids (complete w/ plastic cups for their drinks and small spoons), the staff/kitchen understands the needs for fast service, and are flexible when a child sometimes wonders (explores?) while parents finish a glass of wine and grab the check.
Pastas/pizzas/burgers/polenta/olives… Shirley Temples w/ extra cherries, etc., there’s a lot to love. My father in law actually brought a take out order of their penne w/ peas & prosciutto to Methodist after the birth of our second daughter, with the blessings of the restaurant’s manager.
Our favorite family place is Graziella’s in Clinton Hill on Vanderbilt. The thin crust pizza is really good – my personal favorite is the arugula and parmesan pizza.
The wait staff is really good with kids and its got enough noise that if your child makes noise its not bothersome to others!
My daughter (3.5) can eat 1/2 a small pizza and loves to watch the pizza man make the pizza!
We love any place that doesn’t give us that “oh, a baby” look. So, that makes Patois in Carroll Gardens a favorite. We’ve taken our 14 month-old son to brunch twice there, and both times they’ve been very accommodating. And they’re willing to stray from their brunch menu to make simple scrambled eggs for our boy. Of course, he prefers to grab at Mom’s French Toast, but that’s life with baby!
One of our favorite lunch places is Savoia on Smith St. They are so friendly, especially with children and babies and very tolerant with more than 3 or 4 of them at once. They have a big space in the back and several high chairs that make eating out comfortable. I think we’ve fit up to 6 strollers in there. And plus their brick oven pizza is yum yum! Olive Vine on COurt street is also very yummy and friendly and has space for strollers!
We are always looking for places in the area that can accomdate a stroller, espcially with a baby too young for a high chair. So far, Downtown Atlantic, La Villa, Sette, Anthony’s, Mango Thai, and Bubby’s have been very accomdating. Bubby’s has an excellent brunch and even has tables with “stroller parking.” They do have long waits, though, on the weekends.
Lord knows I need to win this fitness giveaway. My baby is 15 months old and people still think I’m pregnant.
Our favorite place to eat in Park Slope is by far Los Pollitos II. Great Mexican food. Amazing prices. And a wait staff that really seems to be happy to serve you your meal, and not mind the huge mess you leave under the highchair. We’re there every weekend for brunch. Just hope it never gets so crowded that we have to wait for a table.
