Handmade Toys Go Down the Drain?

Have you head about the legislation that Congress passed limiting the amount of lead and phthalates in children’s toys? If not, there is the GOOD NEWS! Toy manufacturers and makers will be responsible for testing each of their toys to make sure they fit the standards. Here is the BAD NEWS. Small toy makers of wood, organic and “lead and phthalate free” toys, including craftswomen/men and Europena toy makers will also have to pay to have their toys tested. It apparently can cost a few thousand dollars a toy product. Small toy makers would never be able to afford this. We need to make exceptions for them. SO, please vote to save handmade toys at Change.org.

Thanks for the post, was wondering where to go to protest it. I was horrified to find that it also applies to ANY thing that a child under 12 uses, including used clothing, etc. I’m all for finding/testing, but as of Feb 9th of this year it will be illegal to sell/give away any clothing/bedding etc that hasn’t been tested. Resale shops lose and landfills gain … the legislation is pretty sweeping.
