contactusI was walking around in Park Slope a month ago with some time to spare. I went into this new pharmacy: Kids RX.  They were still stocking shelves and setting up a train table in the back, but everything looked crisp, clean and la di da- Manhattan style. So, why am I dedicating a post to a new pharmacy?

Because this pharmacy is unique: they make customized flavored medicines.

gummi-bearsKids RX will take any medicine you have and make it into one of their 800 flavors and textures. 800! They will prepare any flavored medicines for adults, children and pets.  The owner, William Brownstein, came up with this idea of masking medicine in flavors and textures. He can make medicine into: a lollipop, pudding, spaghetti sauce, gummi bears (most popular) and transdermal gels to wipe on a forehead if a patient can’t swallow, and anything else you want.  I asked him what the favorite flavors were: vodka and peanut butter. Vodka flavor is for the adults of course.

The owner, William Brownstein, was more than happy to discuss his place. This man practically walks on air. He reminds me of Willy Wonka- just wearing a white lab jacket. He guarantees that he has every medicine in stock or the cost of it is on him.  They accept every insurance in the U.S. or he will buy the medicine for you. The pharmacy will deliver anywhere in Brooklyn. I asked him what the minimum was for delivery: “a q-tip” he quipped. He even offered to pick up a quart of milk on the way for someone if they needed it.  Yes, this is for real.

I just had to test it out. I asked my doctor to call in my prenatal vitamins to Kids RX. I had never had a prescription filled there before.  I went back to the pharmacy counter and was greeted by Carlos, a very smiley pharmacist.  I mentioned that my doctor had called in a prescription. Amazingly, he already knew who I was. He told me, still smiling, they didn’t have my medicine in stock. He offered to have someone deliver it to me in a few hours. Wow!- why not? Then I bought some TriViSol drops. Willow spits these out all the time.  I asked him if he could flavor them. Sure, he smiled.  He suggested a cherry flavor.  I bought the drops and paid the $5 flavoring charge and some Camillia teething drops. Meanwhile, Birch played with the trains and was in awe with the engines that whizzed around on a track overhead. A few hours later, the prescription and cherry flavored TriViSol drops were delivered with the a note to call the pharmacist. Before I could pick up the phone, Carlos, the pharmacist had called me. He wanted to make sure I had received the delivery as no one had answered my door and he had the delivery man leave them anyway. And, “oh, by the way, ” he asked, “could you pay for them, please?” I had forgotten. Imagine! I felt like I had moved to a rosy world where the pharmacist knew you, brought your medicine to you and trusted you to pay. The world felt good and trusting for the rest of the night.

They do also carry infant and newborn items like diapers, feeding tools, sippy cups, pacifiers, etc.  They have the high quality health and beauty products you get from Ricky’s and salons and gift items too.  They sell and prepare homeopathic medications. They carry Bioron products and do vitamin preparations too.

  1. Well, they weren’t exactly a hit. She still grimaces when I give them to her. But, by my standards, they do taste better than the original taste. If I lived close to Kids RX, I would take them back and ask for another flavor- the pharmacist will do that for free. I might try orange…though the pharmacist would have the best ideas. He suggested cherry b/c most medicines (Tylenol, Midol) use the cherry flavor and babies are more accustomed to it.

  2. Can you tell me if the cherry flavored vitamins were a hit? My son hates to take his vitamins so if this works then I am running to the shop.

  3. WOW! This place sounds like an absolute dream. I am going here the next time me, or my daughter need a prescription. I love your vivid colorful description, especially of Willy Wonka in a lab coat- sounds super… sweeet!

  4. Wow! I am checking this place out!
