A Child Grows Event Picks

There is a huge “high” for the Inauguration events coming up next week. It is going to be a historical week – and exciting one. Check here for all the Brooklyn events.

Meanwhile, some of us still need to find some things to do this weekend and next week too!

So, to that end, I am publishing some select events.

FORT GREENE: BLUE STRAWBERRIES JAM

Sunday, January 18: 10 am- 12 pm

the-bsb-concertI CAN’T WAIT to go to this one myself, mainly because Papa Tree will be playing and singing in this new duo band, “The Blue Strawberries.” Silly band name (yes!), totally grooving happy music (yes!) and watching Birch see his dad perform live (priceless!). Usually Birch isn’t awake when Daddy goes out to play (for that matter, I’m not either!). They will be at Ici Restaurant in Fort Greene from 10am- 12 pm. It is $5 admission. Come by and say “HI”!

GOWANUS: CONCERT AND BOUNCY CASTLE

Sunday, January 18: 1 pm- 5 pm

947bhrSo, that leads me to the next event, where the Blue Strawberries played last weekend. It was a big hit at the Bell House. The Bell House is a cool new venue (nice cafe tables and chairs, a couple of couches, huge space and really great sound- but,  yes, loud as a parent complained. Hopefully, The Bell House will read this and reduce the volume level) that is holding Sunday afternoon family parties every week. They have a huge bouncy castle (last week it was a dragon and the kids were nuts over it!), they showed some animates shorts (Pixar generally), they offer free kids’ snacks, full bar and pastries for adults.  Just by the nature of the time (1-5 pm) you can tell it is for older kids- 3 years and up as they are old enough to enjoy the bouncy house and music more. It is $10 per walking human.  The event runs from 1 pm to 5 pm. Chris Mills (Papa Tree knows him from Chicago and says he is good) and Rowland’s Ramblin’ Family Band will be playing.  It is at 149 7th St. Brooklyn, NY 11215

accrobats-3PROSPECT HEIGHTS: CIRCUS STAR TO PERFORM

Sunday, January 18: 2 pm

Chinese circus star, Grace Chang, is doing a magical illusion show with mime, puppetry and acrobatics at the Central Library.  It is to celebrate the Chinese New Year.  Before the show, you might consider going to “Arty Facts”, a class at the Brooklyn Museum. They have classes at 11 am and 2 pm for ages 4-7 years.  Then walk the short distance to the library.  The Central Library is at Grand Army Plaza.

PARK SLOPE: MY SEMINAR ON BEST TIPS FOR BROOKLYN PARENTS

Saturday, January 24: 4:00-5:30 PM

karen_willowSo, this is beginning to sound like a totally self-serving blog as I write my next event pick. Truly, it isn’t (well, just maybe today!). I am speaking next week in BOCOCA for Brooklyn Baby Bites. This seminar is tons of fun- I love to do this. Basically, I give new and expectant parents the low-down on the best resources of Brooklyn. And I mean everything: car services, daycare, birthing places and birthing providers, pediatricians, play groups, classes, stores and YES! I am totally out of breath after the 45 minutes of talking. But, if you miss anything, don’t worry, because I give you a 10 page handout to take home. Register here if you are interested. They are also raffling off a Cosi car seat (everyone in Europe swears by these0 and a Regal Lager baby carrier.  It is at Bend and Bloom (which I hear is a beautiful yoga studio) and the cost is $25 per single/$40 per couple.Bend & Bloom Yoga, 708 Sackett Street (btw. 4th and 5th Aves) in Park Slope. RSVP to chana@babybitesbrooklyn.com. (Photo of me and Willow)

Sunday, January 25th at 2 pm.

Audra is at it again: poised to give one of her fun rocking concerts- but this time it is in conjunction with Cardone the Vaudeville Magician. What an interesting pairing! The concert is at South Paw: 125 5th Ave in Park Slope. Tickets are $12 each.

lunar_headerPROSPECT LEFFERTS: FLOWER MARKET AND CELEBRATION

Sunday, January 25th: 10 am-4:30 pm

This is my favorite flower market event of the year: buy  peach blossoms, citrus trees, flowering quince, etc at BBG’s flower market in celebration of the Lunar New Year. ( I buy the peach blossoms- they are amazing).   Families will enjoy costumes and musical and dance performances. Kids can join in hands-on workshops, and adults can try Chinese brush painting. Special Lunar New Year tours in Chinese or English will highlight BBG’s  collection of plants native to Asia. Limited seating for performances and workshops. First come, first served. applyPARK SLOPE: COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND 529 PROGRAMS

Wednesday, January 28, 2009: 7:30pm

Deena Maerowitz is going to speak on The College Admissions Process. I hear she is excellent and our own expert school consultant at  A Child Grows, Joyce Szuflita, recommends this talk.  Deena is going to talk about: what goes on inside the admissions office, how to make the best decisions about high school courses and extra-curricular activities and more…..Test taking and application preparation. And, have you thought about a 529 program? Upromise will go over that as well. They will do a 15 minute talk about that, so if you just want to hear about that aspect, you can come by and leave early. The seminar will be at Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place @ 8th Avenue, Social Hall. Parents of NY Teens is putting the seminar on.
