winnersWow! We had a total of 151 entries for this giveaway. So many of you rallied! Parents, students, teachers, grandparents and aunts and uncles. I was amazed. I was so happy to hear how much you all loved your schools, and so was Usborne- that they found a way to offer a Second Prize of $50 to a runner-up! So very cool.

I did pick the winner fair and square as I always do. This one took me a couple of hours as I had to write down  all the entries and cut up all those tiny pieces of paper to put into my bowl. See PHOTO. I had a blast stirring it up and picking the winner. And the winner of the $100 book giveaway was P.S. 58! (I think it is no surprise they won with 67 of the entries). Great job P.S. 58!

The actual entrant that won for that school is Christine Davis who wrote: I would like to nominate PS.58. I have had kids at this school since the late 90’s and have watched how the school has grown. The staff and the parents work tirelessly together to provide opportunities for learning for our kids. New Usborne books would not only help fill our library’s shelves but it would also be a wonderful affirmation of the schools commitment to the kids.

The P.S. 58 Carroll School is at 330 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231. Phone: 718-330-9322. Principal Giselle Gault Mcgee. Grade levels PK to 5. Class size is 22 and enrollment is 603 (all stats courtesy of the AWESOME site www.insideschools.org)

And surprise! Second Place winner- again, thanks to Usborne for providing this opportunity to another school is: The Brooklyn Free School. They had 16 submissions which is very impressive for such a small school. The Brooklyn Free School is at 120 16th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215. Phone: 718-499-2707. Founder, Director and Teacher Alan P. Berger. Children ages 5-15 years.  Enrollment is approximately 60 students.

The actual entrant that won for that school is Jeanne Parkhurst who wrote: I nominate the Brooklyn Free School in Park Slope. I had the pleasure of becoming part of this warm, creative community last September as an intern. The school encourages children to learn how they most enjoy to and to be themselves along the way. I believe in the school and I know the community would be grateful for money to buy books!

Usborne and William Waldman, who heads up the local leg of it at Apple Children’s Books, will contact the principal of P.S. 58 and the Director of Brooklyn Free School so that they can select their books and get those books to those kids as fast as they can read them! Thanks everybody!
