applyPARK SLOPE: COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND 529 PROGRAMS

Wednesday, January 28, 2009: 7:30pm

Deena Maerowitz is going to speak on The College Admissions Process. I hear she is excellent and our own expert school consultant at  A Child Grows, Joyce Szuflita, recommends this talk.  Deena is going to talk about: what goes on inside the admissions office, how to make the best decisions about high school courses and extra-curricular activities and more…..Test taking and application preparation. And, have you thought about a 529 program? Upromise will go over that as well. They will do a 15 minute talk about that, so if you just want to hear about that aspect, you can come by and leave early. The seminar will be at Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place @ 8th Avenue, Social Hall. Parents of NY Teens is putting the seminar on.

dogg-9211PROSPECT-LEFFERTS: BUILDING EXHIBIT

Saturday, January 31- May 10, 2009

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is debuting its new exhibit, “Building Brainstorm” this weekend.  It is supposed to be for kids, but I think it will satisfy a lot of adults’ desires too- especially wanna be architects. Kids can plan a dog house, skyscrapter, arrange rooms and furniture (ahhh…that’s for me!) and more in the this whow. There a lot of intereactive elements to this exhibit: you can select building materials, select wood shapes, change window panels, arrange miniature furniture and more.  Brooklyn Children’s Museum
145 Brooklyn Avenue (corner of St. Marks)  Brooklyn, NY 11203. The museum is closed on Mon, Tues (I HATE that they open at 12 pm on the weekdays- don’t they know that half the kids nap at 12:30? I can’t understand who made this scheduling gaff! On the weekends it is open at 10 am though.  PLEASE somebody at the museum- read this!)

bsb-febFORT GREENE: BLUE STRAWBERRIES JAM

Sunday, February 1: 10:30 am- 12 pm

So, I missed this last time due to the children having 102 degree temps, so this week I get to go since everyone is FINALLY on the mend. Papa Tree will be playing and singing in this new duo band, “The Blue Strawberries.” Silly band name (yes!), totally grooving happy music (yes!) and watching Birch see his dad perform live (priceless!). Usually Birch isn’t awake when Daddy goes out to play (for that matter, I’m not either!). They will be at Ici Restaurant in Fort Greene from 10am- 12 pm. It is $5 admission. Come by and say “HI”! Oh, and this will be happening every 1st Sunday of the month.

suzisheltonGOWANUS: SUZI SHELTON

Sunday, February 1: 1 pm- 4 pm

My friend in Boston loves Suzi Shelton…too bad she isn’t here this weekend to see Suzi perform at the Bell House Rocks series for kids. It was a big hit at . The Bell House is a cool new venue (nice cafe tables and chairs, a couple of couches, huge space and really great sound- but,  yes, loud as a parent complained. Hopefully, The Bell House will read this and reduce the volume level) that is holding Sunday afternoon family parties every week. They have a huge bouncy castle (last week it was a dragon and the kids were nuts over it!), they showed some animatedshorts (Pixar generally), they offer free kids’ snacks, full bar and pastries for adults.  Just by the nature of the time (1-4 pm) you can tell it is for older kids- 3 years and up as they are old enough to enjoy the bouncy house and music more. It is $10 per walking human.   It is at 149 7th St. Brooklyn, NY 11215

main_pict_matern8CARROLL GARDENS: SLEEP SEMINAR

Sunday, February 8: 3:30-5 pm

I am always curious to hear what sleep consultants recommend and their different theories. I have heard of “Dream Team Baby” who is giving this talk, they do a lot of talks in the city. I definitely plan on being there to see what tips I can pick up.  I think this would be a good seminar for expectant parents too- I wish I had known a few things about the first steps in helping get your baby to sleep before we started to have problems! Baby Bites Brooklyn is putting this seminar together at one of my favorite venues : Everyday Athlete. By the way, I went to a seminar last week at Bend and Bloom Yoga Studio and thought the space was fantastic. They have prenatal and postnatal yoga too!Everyday Athlete Studio, 136 Union St (btw. Hicks and Columbia). $25 per person, $40 per couple. RSVP: Chana@babybitesbrooklyn.com

  1. Wow what a great site, there are also forums as well to ask questions. Maybe I can get my help without even needing an email consult even though I think $35 seems reasonable. Your the best!!!!!

  2. Oops! I gaffed.
NYCsleepdoctor.com is here in Brooklyn and she does in-home consults.
http://www.familysleep.com DOES do online sleep consults for $35 via email. Deb Pendrick is good. My friend used her. She will also do phone consults…can’t remember the price but you can check her site. Also her site is awesome for all sleep issues!

  3. Oooh online help? I’m checking it out! Like that idea too. What a great service you do for us moms! We so appreciate it :)

  4. Hi Lianna
that is super helpful- thanks so much for the seasoned advice. I want to hear Urban Nurture too – so will try to catch that one as well.

Just did a consult with NYsleepdoctor.com- so far so good, but will post after the sleep plan is done to let you all know what I think.

  5. I have really enjoyed BabyBites, it’s a great way to get out and meet other mom’s and learn something as well. I actually went to one of the Dream Team’s seminars as well as Urban Nurture. I definately learned something some both but I felt that the Urban Nurture’s session was much more informative. The ladies from Dream Team seemed a bit “corporate” if that make sense. The information that they discussed seemed a bit obvious and stuff we read all the time, I just wasn’t impressed and actually was a little bit disappointed. The lady from Urban Nurture seemed very seasoned in the topic and answered questions very thoroughly. I did visit the Dream Teams site and apparently they are fairly new to this subject. So, given that both of them have spoken at the venues and probably will again if you had to pick which one to go to I would recommend Urban’s seminars, really impressive stuff :) . Hope this is helpful.
