Joyce Szuflita is well-known for her deep knowledge about Brooklyn schools. Somehow she has wrapped her mind around the mind-warping admissions process, the DOE and its bureaucratic labyrinth and finding the right school for your family. I watched her give a talk last Monday night. You should have seen the parents who sought her out after she stepped away from the podium. Since some of you didn’t get to pick her brain that night, she was kind enough to give out some of that information here on the blog. To read all of Joyce’s article, check out her own Expert Page on this blog.

Sometimes when you need information it seems it is impossible to find. That is why A Child Grows In Brooklyn is so great. So many good sources in one spot. I thought it would be handy for you to have some school relevant phone numbers and websites all in one place so that you can find the right person with the right answer right away (or at least within 24 hours).

Call them to find what elementary school you are zoned for. Don’t bother with the cumbersome DOE website for this. The operators are nice and fast.

Bookmark the DOE website. It is big and deep and dense but sometimes you can find the information you need there.
If you have a question about Elementary school, first go to your zoned school or call and talk to the secretary. That is the fastest way and probably the most accurate for your specific needs, but you can also write to

They will eventually get back to you, but probably long after you have forgotten your question.

They live in the basement of Brooklyn Tech HS and if you visit them in person you can get many useful booklets and lots of personalized attention. You can call and leave a message and they will get back to you eventually, but your question will be answered much more quickly if you pay them a visit. Just don’t go on the first couple days of school.
