shapeimage_6“La Famiglia Dimitri”, which is in the middle of its 3 week run at the New Victory, is getting great reviews. The show is made up of a Swiss family of clowns that do the circus the old-fashioned vaudeville way.  NY Theater.com said, “The enchanting show is prop-heavy, dialogue-light, and rich in performance forms that have been delighting for centuries. Highly-skilled clowning in the European tradition by Clown and Kai share the stage with tight wire and slack wire acrobatics (David and Masha respectively), a goofy twist on contortionism, and illusions. There is even a juggling interlude that includes a few things I hadn’t seen before, like juggling blasts of water.” And,  CBS News reviewed it as,  ” a circus that.. bounces along at a sweet, acoustic pace, as calm and bright-eyed as a toddler rising from a long, refreshing nap.” It should be a fantastic outing! We are giving away a family pack of tickets (4 seats)! However, If you don’t win, you can use a discount code for 15% off tickets. 1. for my daughters 4th birthday she requested girls only so i am grabbing her 2 best friends and their moms and having a girls day out
museum and lunch or movie and lunch
low mantanaince, low cost she is thrilled
and i assume the 3 moms will actually talk and have fun unlike the normal circus like atmosphere of most large parties

  2. Here’s my take on a low maintenance, low budget party within walking distance from your home.
My daughter’s first birthday party was at our local playground. We sent out e-vites, paid $25 for a park permit, ordered food and cupcakes from Fairway (which were delivered right to the park) and bought themed paper goods from Party City. The kids ran around and had a great time.
The planning process wasn’t more than an hour on the computer (evites and permit), phone call(food order) and a trip to Party City (which also could’ve been ordered online ahead of time).

  3. With the economy in the dumps, we’re going the do-it-yourself route this month with an outdoor Knights & Princesses party. We have a birthday knight and a birthday princess and will be decorating shields and crowns, playing pin the flag on the castle, and finally, slaying the dragon (pinata)!

  4. I love this idea (haven’t yet executed it, though): a Backwards Party.. you start by sending out a thank you note to each invited guest (with party info on it). decorate the place with balloons all over the floor. even wear the party hats backwards. as guests arrive, make sure you say goodbye and hand out a goodie bag to each. next, cake is served followed by games. towards the end, serve the pizza, as the party winds down. Make sure you say hello as guests leave! Send out the invites a week later (with a small thank you note attached, of course). Voila, a Backwards Party!

  5. Another not so expensive option is to have it at the Moxie spot on Atlantic Ave. If it’s a small party, you don’t even have to pay a fee, you just reserve your table. If you want 30 or more you can rent the whole floor for a reasonable amount and there are loads of things for the kids to do.

  6. We had a great party for a bunch of little girls with a simple craft-making session making “magic wands.”

We also went to a great party at the Hootenanny Art House, where Pete Hamm did a great job entertaining. http://www.hootenannyarthouse.com/

  7. Hi,
We had Jen, from Audra Rocks come to my daughters 3rd birthday party and she was amazing. She brought her guitar, music toys and instruments for the kids to join in with. The kids LOVED her. She even led the Happy Birthday song!

  8. For my son’s 3rd Birthday we rented a party room and decorated and planned all the activities our self. “Pining a tail on the Donkey” was such a fun (it’s available in most 99c stores). Then we did some crafts. I bought quick-stick foam flowers and kids just loved them. I also printed some coloring pages with their favorite characters (you can get them on sites like http://www.funschool.com or http://www.kabose.com or just Google printable coloring pages. All the kids were busy and happy.

  9. We had a wonderful 2nd birthday at NY City Explorer’s on Atlantic. They were easy and nice to work with planning everything within our budget. From the feedback I got both parents and kids had a great time. Always nice when parents can have a party too! I think the best thing though was they had two different activities planned during the time which the kids flocked to (and I didn’t have to clean or set up!). One was a sing along music time and the other was a crafts area (making trains out of tp holders, feathers, sequins etc). Fun!

  10. I’m a fan of simple outdoor parties, and have been to ones in both Prospect Park (near the carousel) and in FG Park that were great. Lots of options for the under-6 crowd like carousel rides, Parachute play, a balloon stomp, water-balloon toss, face painting, t-shirt decorating, playground time … cheap outdoor fun!

  11. We had our daughter’s first birthday extravaganza at Parkers Place in Park Slope (all party information is booked and can be viewed here http://www.maggiesthreads.com)…

It was a wonderful environment, since it is a school, everything was just the right size for the kids – they also got to play with all the toys. They have different themes, we chose a Music Theme and they had a teacher from Music Together come in and sing and dance and entertain the kids – we got pizza and apple juice and a home made organic birthday cake baked by the owner’s husband!

We had a wonderful experience at Parker’s Place and would highly recommend it!

  12. I highly recommend Sharon Enlow – Facepainter for all of your facepainting needs … Her skills are simply amazing … She can be reached at

  13. Aviator Sports (www.aviatorsports.com) has fantastic party options. They have rock climbing, ice skating, soccer, gymnastics, you name it they have it. They also have a parking lot and great instructors.

  14. We just love The Little Gym at 8681 18th Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11214 (718) 259-6878. We have celebrated 2 of my daughter’s birthdays there. Winnie and Lisa (owners) take care of planning fun and games, beautifully decorating the dining area, goody bags, and even mailing out invitations. Their wonderful staff keep the children smiling and upbeat during an hour of games and activities. All I had to bring was the birthday child and cake!
