I agree. I think helping them cook is a great extension of having them grocery shop with you as Donna suggested. Teaching them about the foods is great advice too. Birch loves to cook, and, though it is a lot more work to supervise this, especially while holding my newborn, it's worth it. He wants to eat what he cooks.

I recently tried the "eggs are great protein- they help give you long-term energy to play", convinced him to eat the eggs. Thanks Donna for that advice.

What about including your child in on food preparation? And teaching them where it all comes from? Sometimes I think "parenting experts" lose sight of the basic things that some Grandmothers have been going on about for years.

great info. i posted tips for picky eaters on my blog recently. we hit a lot of the same points. and, like you, i don't think the idea of hiding veggies in food is useful for kids (or parents!) long term.

i also added a few other suggestions. including trying to remember that food is one of the first opportunities for kids to flex their independence "muscle."

also a fun and delicious recipe for maple almond tofu stars. yum! in fact, we have lots of idea and recipes for picky eaters all over the site. my little guy is 3-years-old—so i've spend the last year living with this. (although i will say i think it is coming to an end. fingers crossed!)
