Have you ever wondered what the “buzz” about getting into nursery school is all about? What REALLY goes on behind the closed doors of admissions and what are all the parents going through? The movie Nursery University takes you through it all.
It is funny, exhausting and dizzying to see what parents put themselves and their kids through to get into a private school in Manhattan. The movie is edited with humor and a sense of suspense with good accompanying music. Some of the parents you end up liking, others, mmmm…not so much. One mother asks, “is it okay to bring my baby nurse to the school tour?” Of particular surprise to me is that there are so many seminars and consultants competing to help steer parents through this insane process. The movie is sympathetic to both the parents and the admissions directors. Both parties want the right match, but there are too many kids for too few spaces and so the games begin.
Nursery University is opening in Brooklyn this Friday, May 1st at Cobble Hill Cinemas and runs through Thursday May 7th. This blog’s School Expert, Joyce Szuflita, is leading a discussion after the 5:20 pm showing on Sat. May 2 at Cobble Hill Cinemas.

A review from New York Magazine: ” Absorbing and unflinching, it’s a horror movie for anyone with young children and a comedy for everyone else. ”
The New York Times: “Delicately sidestepping the minefields of entitlement and class fear, the filmmakers keep the tone breezy and the view micro.“
