Book Giveaway: City Weekends

Alison Lowenstein, author
Today’s giveaway (for TWO winners!) is the new book, City Weekends: Greatest Escapes and Weekend Getaways In and Around New York City by Alison Lowenstein, who also wrote City Baby Brooklyn.
The book is for all your moods: whether you want to stay in the city or travel for a day or a whole weekend, Alison has thought of some unique itineraries. Alison has tested all of the trips, including kid-friendly trips with her three and five year olds, so you really get insider tips. The book is $22.50. You can buy it at most of the local Brooklyn book stores (buy local!) or from amazon.
Here are the entries from her book that I have dog-eared for future travel:
- A Night at the Rodeo: Pilesgrove, NJ and the Brandywine Valley, Pennsylvania and Delaware (see Alison in her cute cowboy hat at the rodeo?)
- It’s Not the Sixth Borough: Philadelphia, PA (which she has given the highlights, exclusive for our readers here)
- It’s All about the Resort and Driving the Track: The Poconos
- Seasonal Festivals and Great Hikes: Great Barrington and Lenox, MA
So, here is how to Enter the Contest: (and it’s easy peasy!)
Do you have a favorite “getaway”? It can be one here in the city, Brooklyn or within a few hours from here. If you have the inclination (oh, please….) send us all the gritty details so that we can go there too! Your entry can be as simple as “Providence Day Spa” for a massage with …… or a day trip to Chinatown to eat at such and such. See what I mean? Easy peasy! If it is appealing, I might list it under my new page, “Family Getaways”. Alison’s listing about Philadelphia is the only one listed there now and I would love to hear of your escapades!
Contest ends by Monday, May 18th at 10 pm. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 12th. The publisher will send a copy of the book to each of the winners. Good luck!!!

we love to head off to the NY Aquarium when it opens and then when we are done there we walk along the boardwalk – feels like we are miles away from home!
I have to agree – favorite local, no effort, inexpensive getaway is the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens!
A nice day trip to Bear Mountain State Park is one of our favorites. Even better if you stay over night. There are paddle boats, picnic areas, a carousel, and the wonderful zoo trail is a must, it is quite a deal for $1 donation. (That was what it cost us to go on the zoo trail last time we were there). They also have a huge outdoor pool. Just check their website for pool schedule. My daughter loves to spend time by the lake feeding the birds before heading for the zoo.
Our favorite “getaway” on a weekend or any day is Prospect Park in Brooklyn – you everything there – playgrounds, the zoo, the botanical gardens, the carousel and long stretches of green grass and trees.
My favorite getaway is the Jersey Shore it is about an hour away, and I can just go to the beach relax or go shopping.. I love it.
Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Feels like a trip out of town and it’s just a few blocks away!
Deena
I love the New Paltz area. It’s close enough for a day trip with lots of good hiking and tasty restaurants.
I love central park as there is so much to see. I have a soon to be two year old, and walking from W59th street to 90 str is an adventure of plants, birds, people, color, playgrounds, trails and the list goes on. It only costs me coffee and a chocolate croissant. At the end of the day I have a contented child and a very happy me.
We love going to Princeton NJ overnight and staying at the Marriot Forrestral Village, which has a fantastic indoor pool and spacious rooms. Princeton takes us an hour to get to, yet feels a world away
I like to “get away” to one of the parks, mostly Central Park. I would really love to learn some more places to go, LOL!! Thanks for the chance

i am a big fan of Bear Mountain State Park. it’s just an hour north of the City. great hiking (or grassy areas if you’re so inclined), amenities, ducks and rocks for the kids to enjoy, and a swimming pool in the summertime.
I made a mistake with my email address in previous post. Please correct!
A favorite getaway for me and my daughter is Harriman State Park in Rockland/Orange county.

We love going hiking in New Jersey on the weekends – works with or without the kids. NJ gets a bad rap sometimes, but has some amazingly beautiful state parks and hiking spots.
i love going to the bronx zoo and walking the boardwalk at orchard beach thanks for the giveaway
For us it is a getaway to just go over to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens on Free Tuesdays… may not seem like much but we can pretend we’re out of the city and in some really great nature land and be five mins from home. Deep in Prospect Park works too!
Sorry one more reply. I realized my first one was all about food. I absolutely love taking a walk around 5th avenue in Park Slope or the Dumbo Area. They have the great flea markets down there right now and I always check out the sales at West Elm. It’s a nice shopping outing without having to go into the city or Westchester
My favorite local getaway with my husband is Michael’s or Flemings. Michael’s is a local Italian Restaurant on Ave R and Nostrand. We love it. Fleming’s is in Edgewater, NJ. It’s a steak house so if you are not into meat this isnt’ the place for you, though they have a great salmon and great mashed potatoes. For those of you looking for a getaway GETAWAY….like getaway on a plane….nothing beats the Dominican REpublic. It’s a great buy for the buck whether you choose Puerto Plata or Punta Cana. Casa de Campo a little pricier, but it’s a great vaca spot with or without the kids, not that we’d ever do anything without the kids
There are so many “escapes” that I love….
2 of my favorite NY things to do are low cost and family-friendly…
A ride to City Island in the Bronx. It’s like another world. It has a very homey feel–quaint cottages and little mom and pop shops. The restaurants aren’t fancy at all but they food is great and cheap!! (and you get a ton). My favorite is JPs…. The best fried shrimp ever
Another favorite is hitting the beach. There’s nothing like getting up really early on a Saturday morning, hopping in the car and heading to Long Beach in LI (my fave). We get there nice and early–hardly anyone else around. The sound of the ocean and the breeze…. Simply paradise. I’ve been going to Long Beach since I was a kid and I just love it. And this year I’m especially excited to share it with my baby boy. I especially like the beach in the fall Siting on the sand with a warm blanket wrapped around us-it’s so peaceful.
Have fun!
I love renting houses for the weekend in Montauk. We usually try to split the cost with friends who also have kids. It’s a great, inexpensive way to get out of the city. We have the best luck finding rentals using http://www.cyberrentals.com. Recently, we went off season and just played in the snow and cooked our own lobster!
