Where To Find A Nanny?

The Irish Echo

The Irish Echo

Today, as I was trying to find placement for our nanny for a couple of days a week, I was reminded how hard it is to not only place a nanny these days with the economy, but also to find one.

Here are my top suggestions for locations to find a nanny:

1. Yahoo parents groups. Don’t just look in your neighborhood- you might find a nanny willing to travel. To find the Yahoo parents groups, look at my page here.

2. The Irish Echo. This widely read Irish-American paper has always been a place where nannies place ads and people place “situations wanted.” The quality of candidates is unusually high here.

3. NY City Explorers. nycityexplorers.com. NY City Explorers can help you find another family to “share a nanny”, find a nanny or a babysitter or you can join their babysitting club.  They also have drop-off too! Both owners are lovely and the sitters I have met through them have been vibrant and fun.

4. Now Nanny. www.nownannyny.com You can get a nanny by the hour or a permanent one or hire out for children party’s assistants and custom packages. Rates start at $15.50 an hour. I know both the owners of Now Nanny and would definitely say they have good judgment.

5. Craig’s List. I have had 3 friends find wonderful nannies through good ‘ol Craig’s List.

What about your questions on how much to pay a nanny, what vacation days does she get, do you provide meals, etc?

Park Slope Parents did an excellent survey in 2008 that helps take the mystery out of these questions. Get the results of the Nanny Survey here.
