Big clothing swap this weekend!

Don’t forget to check our Halloween listings too! Halloween events are listed there and not here!

November 7: (yes, I know this is next month- but tix go fast)!: 2-5 pm: Baby Loves Disco
BLD is usually sold out, so I am listing this event WAY ahead of time, so you won’t lose out!  Nov. 7th Pajama Party at BLD. The party is at favorite local place Southpaw- where you can snack (healthily), read books and hula hoop and just disco with scarves and instruments. A total blast and well worth it. $12 online advance purchase, $15 at the door. Price is for each walking human. Buy tickets online at www.babylovesdisco.com.  Southpaw, 125 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217  http://www.spsounds.com/

October 15-November 1st: Hansel and Gretel from Scotland
The New Victory Theater is having a Scottish Festival and one of the productions they have brought over is Hansel and Gretel,  based on an original work by the National Theatre of Scotland (Black Watch). Audiences of 100 at a time take an eerie “promenade” through a New Vic that is transformed from basement to balcony into a haunted forest and other surprising destinations.  Playgoers will follow the path of Hansel and Gretel as the pair journeys from their kitschy 1970s inspired home through a spooky forest and into the dangerous clutches of a bald-headed witch who is at once nasty, funny and completely off-her-rocker.  Hansel and Gretel features live music – and for a little nostalgia and camp – a few Bay City Rollers’ tunes in the soundtrack.  The show received wide acclaim last year when it was the featured holiday show at the Barbican in London.  Theater-goers who buy tickets for three or more New Vic shows qualify for free Membership benefits, including 30% savings.  To purchase tickets online visit NewVictory.org, and to purchase by phone, call 646-223-3010. (This got a VERY good review from TONY Kids this last week- but the writer did warn readers- saying it was scary in the tradition of Grimms Fairly Tales).

November 13-29: Peter and the Wolf (recommended to buy tix early)
This one is on our “must do” list and I think it is on a lot of parents’ lists- so don’t wait to get your tickets for this one.  This production comes via the UK and starring British film and stage actor Brian Blessed as the Narrator, this U.S. premiere boasts a brand new prequel, seamlessly partnering a lively and whimsical score with the original 1936 composition.  This production of Peter and the Wolf represents the first time that the Prokofiev estate has licensed the original work to be performed in conjunction with a new composition.  In addition to Mr. Blessed, the production — a blend of music, dance and theater — features 10 dancers and an ensemble of eight musicians.  To purchase tickets online visit NewVictory.org, and to purchase by phone, call 646-223-3010.

Event Picks Oct. 15 – 25

Oct 15th, 2009 | By Karen | Category: Events | Edit

9-21-stroller-finalFirst, don’t forget to check our Halloween Events here. There are events for this week and weekend that are only on the Halloween Event Picks and not here. These are our regular A Child Grows Event Picks.

Highlights for the this weekend:

  • Schoolfest on Sunday, October 18th in Williamsburg.
  • Halloween Harvest Festival at Socrates Sculpture Park on Saturday, October 17th
  • Mon. Oct. 19- 24th (clothing drop off for a clothing swap at Prospect Park Y)
  • Thursday, Oct. 22, 7:00-8:30 pm: Strollers, Birth Plans, Nannies … Oh My! – I will be speaking with another mom about what you need to know about all of the above and more!
  • Hansel and Gretel from Scotland where the audience travels through the theater (older children only)

Friday, October 2 – October 18: various times: Cardboard Box Theater from Scotland
I took Birch to this last Saturday. IT IS LOVELY! Birch turned to me with a smile and laugh about every 30 seconds while watching this Scottish production. He said “the performer is magic.” That’s how all the children saw Andy and his cardboard box as he turned it into various shapes and homes. It was sweet, funny and paced well. I definitely would recommend this production as a first theater experience.  The production of “My House” is for children 0-3 years – which is rather refreshing. There is very little theater for this age group and with reason- it is really hard to entertain them.  To purchase tickets online visit NewVictory.org, and to purchase by phone, call 646-223-3010. Full-price tickets for individual productions, as low as $12.50 each,

November 7: 2-5 pm: Baby Loves Disco

A celebration of Diwali—the Hindu festival of lights! The holiday is a time for families to share in rich traditions, decorate their homes, and tell magical stories about heroes, gods, and goddesses! Come hear legends associated with this special day, and make your own Diwali art to decorate your home.  Enjoy the BCM’s new exhibition and Hindu Celebrations. Saturday, October 17 : 11 am- 2 pm: Halloween Harvest Festival at Socrates
This festival is called “glamrock” because it is a little more chic than your average harvest festival. Fabulous performer Audra Rox will perform as you and your little ones create rock star costumes with the help of Socrates Sculpture Park’s artists.  All costume materials will be provided free of charge.  Kids can also join a Giant Instrument Jam and get their face painted by Agostino Arts (one of the better facepainters, in my opinion).  There will be a Canine Costume Contest at 1 pm.  At 2 pm, the Red Door Theatre Company will present an outdoor performance of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The whole event is free. For location and map of this cool park in Queens, go to the parks website.

Sunday, October 18: 11 am – 3 pm: Schoolfest
Last year this school fest, put on my Town Square Inc, was a huge success. Go early as some of the vendors left on the early side apparently.  They will have tables from all the schools, day care centers, and child service providers in Greenpoint, Williamsburg – and now, Bushwick and a student talent show.  They are also working to have a college presence this time.  Workshops are:  (1) Pre-K/Elementary choices/application, (2) Middle School choices/application, (3) High School choices/application, (4) Gifted & Talented programs, (5) Special Needs resources, (6) College applications and the disabled,  (7) College choices, (8) Student Loans, and more.  Held at 325 Bushwick Avenue, home to both PS 147 and the Brooklyn Latin School.

Sunday, October 18: 11am to 3:00pm: Annual Harvest Festival
Highlights of this family-oriented event include pony rides, a petting zoo, pumpkin and face painting, and arts and crafts.  There will also be a professional costume designer to help create costumes that fit the Park Slope Civic Council’s Halloween parade theme, “Spooky Seas.” Everything needed to help create a costume will be supplied. Mr. Ray, last year’s popular musical act, will perform at 11:30am and Jon Samson and Co-Creative Music will perform at 1:30pm. A puppet performance of “Witch Bungle” featuring puppeteer Theresa Linnihan will take place at 3:00pm. All of this takes place at the Old Stone House in Washington Park.

Sunday, October 18: 11am to 4 pm: New York City Apple Day
Lower East Side Business Improvement invites everyone to Orchard Street (between Broome and Grand Streets) for a free street festival welcoming the first days of fall. With the LES’s historic roots dating back as far as the sixteenth century Delancey Farm’s orchard, there’s no better place to celebrate.  Green Market will be bringing a cider press and there will also be exhibitions, music and arts-and-crafts for the kids, walking tours for the adults, and many more fun activities! The highlight of the festival is the wide sampling of apple-themed treats. In addition, there will be special retail and restaurant offerings from nearby stores and cultural havens.

Monday, October 19: 4 pm: Big Movies for Little Kids
If you haven’t done this before, this is a really fun event to do. It seems to sell out a lot so either buy advance tickets that are available directly at the cinema’s box office (after 1pm daily). To secure a seat, tickets may also be purchased on-line: www.cobblehilltheatre.com
