Sunday, November 1: all day! NYC Marathon
Here is the scoop for watching it in Brooklyn. If you want to see the whole course map, click here. (There have been some changes this year!)
Brooklyn: At Fourth Avenue and 7th Street, Time Warner Cable will have video screens and access to the Race Day Tracker; enter your runner’s official bib number and get an idea of where he or she is. In Fort Greene, the Brooklyn Academy of Music at Fourth Avenue and Lafayette Avenue is a popular place to view the marathon — there’s an ING Cheering Zone here. This is where the three different streams of runners merge and the lead pack often begins to break up.  Farther into Fort Greene on Lafayette Avenue, lots of marathon-day stoop parties go on here. Between Miles 10 and 11 on Bedford Avenue, the course goes through the Satmar Hassidic community before heading into Williamsburg. Consider McCarren Park in Williamsburg as a viewing spot: It’s tree-lined and attracts a lot of spectators. The last neighborhood in Brooklyn is Greenpoint.

Sunday, November 1: all day! NYC Marathon Party
Still Hip will be out
in full force with noise makers and their mega banner! And I know Still Hip’s owner Gabby – she will be yelling her rally cry for all the runners until her throat is hoarse.  Grab a croissant from Choice Market and a bloody mary from Mirrors and join the group. There will also be a
bake sale for PS 11- hmm….eat a brownie while watching others run their butts off?!

November 7: 10 am to 11:30 am: Sibling Rivalry
This blog’s Parent Coach, Alice Kaltman, is running her popular workshops again this fall.  This is an important one if you have more than one child, are expecting, or even just considering.  This Talk focuses on how to defuse sibling tensions by looking at the underlying issues and assumptions that get in the way of effective parenting. Cost: $10 per person.  Pre-registration is required.  For more information call 917.509.9531 or to RSVP. Or e-mail Alice at info@familymattersny.com.  Don’t forget that Alice has also started something really cool! “30 for 30″.  30 for 30 are half-hour telephone parent-coaching consultations priced at $30. I did one and it was well worth it. I think I got Birch straightened out (wink wink!)

November 7: (tix go fast)!: 2-5 pm: Baby Loves Disco
BLD is usually sold out, so I am listing this event WAY ahead of time, so you won’t lose out!  Nov. 7th Pajama Party at BLD. The party is at favorite local place Southpaw- where you can snack (healthily), read books and hula hoop and just disco with scarves and instruments. A total blast and well worth it. $12 online advance purchase, $15 at the door. Price is for each walking human. Buy tickets online at www.babylovesdisco.com.  Southpaw, 125 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217  http://www.spsounds.com/

October 15-November 1st: Hansel and Gretel from Scotland
The New Victory Theater is having a Scottish Festival and one of the productions they have brought over is Hansel and Gretel,  based on an original work by the National Theatre of Scotland (Black Watch). Audiences of 100 at a time take an eerie “promenade” through a New Vic that is transformed from basement to balcony into a haunted forest and other surprising destinations.  Playgoers will follow the path of Hansel and Gretel as the pair journeys from their kitschy 1970s inspired home through a spooky forest and into the dangerous clutches of a bald-headed witch who is at once nasty, funny and completely off-her-rocker.  Hansel and Gretel features live music – and for a little nostalgia and camp – a few Bay City Rollers’ tunes in the soundtrack.  The show received wide acclaim last year when it was the featured holiday show at the Barbican in London.  Theater-goers who buy tickets for three or more New Vic shows qualify for free Membership benefits, including 30% savings.  To purchase tickets online visit NewVictory.org, and to purchase by phone, call 646-223-3010. (This got a VERY good review from TONY Kids this last week- but the writer did warn readers- saying it was scary in the tradition of Grimms Fairly Tales).

November 13-29: Peter and the Wolf (recommended to buy tix early)
This one is on our “must do” list and I think it is on a lot of parents’ lists- so don’t wait to get your tickets for this one.  This production comes via the UK and starring British film and stage actor Brian Blessed as the Narrator, this U.S. premiere boasts a brand new prequel, seamlessly partnering a lively and whimsical score with the original 1936 composition.  This production of Peter and the Wolf represents the first time that the Prokofiev estate has licensed the original work to be performed in conjunction with a new composition.  In addition to Mr. Blessed, the production — a blend of music, dance and theater — features 10 dancers and an ensemble of eight musicians.  To purchase tickets online visit NewVictory.org, and to purchase by phone, call 646-223-3010.
