In Brooklyn, we have known the MTA at its worst: The G (ghost) train, the F ($%&*!)ing train that never comes and the C (cacophany) train. And now they want to make things even harder on us by phasing out free student fares, eliminating the W and the Z and reducing/ending service on bus lines! We are also in for a fare hike in 2011. I’m mad!
I never even got to try out the free student fare- what? Something free in NYC? And, it’s gone before I even got a taste of it.
Nicole Gelianas, a contributing editor to the Manhattan Institute City Journal, is author of “After the Fall: Saving Capitalism from Wall Street — and Washington.”, has a great point in a New York Times article.
If the authority’s costs had kept up with inflation during the last half-decade, the M.T.A. would not face big deficits today. Instead, labor costs have increased more than 40 percent, driven by pension and health care benefits. Next year, pensions and health care will cost the authority nearly $2.2 billion, more than one-fifth of its cash operating expenses.
The MTA is a government agency- how can we expect it to be profitable?
