Here I am carrying Birch at 2 years old, 30 pounds...and me...pregnant!

As I was sorting through my collection of slings the other night, desperately searching for the right one for a friend’s newborn and I thought this has to be easier! Someone, somewhere must have written about all the carriers, when to use them and HOW to use them.  I couldn’t remember which sling was best for a newborn: I guess I would fail as a doula.

After a quick internet search, I did find the mothers of all baby wearing sites: Wear Your Baby and The Baby Wearer. The Baby Wearers’ forums are incredible: they get 2000 new posts per day- so you know if you ask a question, it will be addressed!

They list types of carriers, carriers by age, weight, activity and have reader reviews. Both sites have comprehensive directions for carriers which is immensely helpful. The key is trying to put the carrier on while clicking through the website instructions!

  1. It is a Kozy Karrier and you do tie it basically the same way on the front and on the back. You can twist the straps in front if that is more comfortable on your chest.

  2. HI Jennifer
EEK! I don’t know the name of the carrier since it was Megan Davidson’s (doula who teaches about baby carriers). However, I have the same type of carrier- called a Baby Hawk, which I wear on my back in this exact way. I love it- so much easier to travel with than the Ergo- but not so easy when you have a squirming 15 month old- though she has gotten used to being still on my back while I am tying.
Here are the instructions on how to back carry with mei tai:

  3. Hey Karen, is that the Mei Tai you have in the photo? I have that and I love it, but I’ve only used it as a front carrier…but Gus is getting pretty big so I thought I’d have to give it up. It looks like you tied it the way you would in front just backwards?
