Sleeping Beauty's magnificent set- the most elaborate production by NYC Ballet
There are some awesome events this weekend: the debut of Sleeping Beauty by the New York City Ballet, a Taco competition (that comes with a free beer!), family folk dancing, family yoga and a Sesame Street celebration. This coming week, join a breastfeeding circle, attend a cloth diapering workshop, a nursery talk or hear one of my favorite parenting authors of “The Blessing of a Skinned Knee.” Tickets you must buy now for advance events: Dan Zanes at BAM, BAM’s Family Festival, Tribeca Kids Cinema, Baby Loves Disco Valentine’s Ball, the Museum of Natural History’s sleepovers and interactive science show. There’s a lot in between: some much-deserved nights out for mom (wine/cupcakes and book club with Amy Sohn’s Prospect Park West).
Have a fantastic weekend!

You remember the films Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), right? Well, film director Tim Burton has an exhibit at MOMA that explores the full range of his creative work, tracing the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work in film. It brings together over seven hundred examples of rarely or never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, moving image works, concept art, storyboards, puppets, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera. The gallery exhibition is accompanied by a complete retrospective of Burton’s theatrical features and shorts, as well as a lavishly illustrated publication.
Details: If you plan to see the exhibition Tim Burton (November 22, 2009–April 26, 2010), please be aware that gallery occupancy is limited. Timed tickets to enter Tim Burton are suggested on weekdays and required on all weekends and holidays. Timed tickets guarantee entrance to the exhibition at the time designated on the ticket, and carry no extra charge. This ticket also permits you to all other Museum galleries, exhibitions, and films. Saturday, January 30 and Sunday, January 31st and all weekends through Feb. 28th: 2 PM: Sleeping Beauty
The New York City Ballet recommends their Sleeping Beauty production for ages 5 years and up. But, because the ballet happens in two acts, younger kids can steal out after the first act of 73 minutes (the second act is 57 minutes with a 20 min intermission). This is the most elaborate production ever presented by New York City Ballet, requiring over 100 dancers, including students from the School of American Ballet, and 250 costumes. The scenic designs by David Mitchell utilize numerous methods to change from one lavish setting to the next without breaking the rhythm of the ballet. Mitchell’s sets create an atmosphere of fairy tale magic that brings the audience into a mystical world where spells are cast, a fairy comes to the aid of a handsome prince, and Puss in Boots comes to dance for royal guests.
Details: Tickets range from $20-125. To purchase tickets go to http://new.lincolncenter.org/. You can also buy evening tickets for 7 pm or 8 pm performances.
Saturday, January 30th and Sunday, January 31st : 10 am- 5 pm: Brooklyn Flea
The Brooklyn Flea is in their new winter location in the spectacular former Williamsburg Savings Bank at One Hanson Place in Fort Greene. The location is stunning with mosaic tiles lining the floor, mosaic murals with gold leafing and a vaulted ceiling. There are 100 vendors, including the beloved Red Hook food vendors. It’s fun to visit the vault downstairs were the majority of the food vendors are and then wander into the former executive offices, now occupied by craft makers. Though the aisles are wide enough for strollers, the stairs (up and down) are not stroller-friendly, though everyone helped me bring my stroller up and down the stairs. The Brooklyn Flea will be in its new location until March 28th. For a photo of the incredible location and our original post about the story, go here.

Dear Edwina (Friday, December 11 – February 15)
I was given tickets to Dear Edwina last weekend so Birch (3.5 years) and I went. The show is back this year after being nominated by the Drama Desk for Best Family Musical. This is the same team who created the musical “Junie B. Jones”. So, it’s no surprise that when the 60-minute show ended, I had the songs buzzing in my brain and Birch turned to me to ask, “Can we see it again?” Edwina, the eager protagonist, offers advice, with the support of the neighborhood kids, in intelligent, cleverly worded songs and dance numbers. The stronger sketches not only teach the kids a lesson (how to be friendly, set the table, politely decline yucky food), but have the troupe taking on characters that are outrageously fun for the kids. Birch learned how to set the table all based on a catchy song with oversized props and a silly trilling chef. The character of “Frankenmonster the annoying guest” is dealt with complete sensitivity about differences but elicited huge giggles from the kids- and the adults. The small stage and intimate theater make the experience engaging for the children. It was sad to see the theater only a quarter full when it deserves to be chock full. We downloaded the Dear Edwina album on itunes and it is in regular play at our place now. I would recommend it for children ages 3.5 years and up, though a 4 year old might be more comfortable with the 60 minute length.
Details: Fridays: 7 PM Saturdays: 11 AM, 1 PM, 4 PM Sundays: 11 AM, 1 PM, 4 PM $39. Telecharge: 212.239.6200. DearEdwina.com the DR2 Kids Theatre (103 E. 15th St., NYC) (between Union Square E. & Irving Pl.), NYC
