I’m starting something new this week and I hope it helps. In Event Picks, I am going to list tickets you need to buy in advance first, so you don’t miss out on any upcoming shows. The cheeky Aussies of Circa push their own limits as they barrel, bolt and balance at breakneck speed across The New Victory stage in 46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes from March 19 through April 4, 2010. Featuring four cirque talents with expertise in such disciplines as aerial acrobatics, hand balancing, contortion and hilarious clowning, 46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes is a zany salvo of traditional and not-so-traditional circus stunts. - Sunday, February 28: 2 pm: Gustafer Yellowgold Show at Bell House
We are so excited to go see Gustafer in his old hometown. This show, which has been called, a cross between ‘Yellow Submarine’ and Dr. Seuss.” by The New York Times and named Best of New York by New York Magazine, should be a home run. Morgan Taylor — illustrator, songwriter, and creator of the Gustafer Yellowgold multimedia “musical moving storybook” concert experience — is hailed as one of today’s most original performers on the family music scene. Through April 18th: Math Midway at New York Hall of Science

Through April 26: Tim Burton Exhibit at MOMA
You remember the films Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), right? Well, film director Tim Burton has an exhibit at MOMA that explores the full range of his creative work, tracing the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work in film. It brings together over seven hundred examples of rarely or never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, moving image works, concept art, storyboards, puppets, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera. The gallery exhibition is accompanied by a complete retrospective of Burton’s theatrical features and shorts, as well as a lavishly illustrated publication.

Butterflies and Journey to the Stars at the American Museum of Natural History
Enter the lovely (and warm) exhibit of the live butterflies in the Butterfly Conservatory for an escape from winter. See the all-new Space Show “Journey to the Stars”, narrated by Whoopi Goldberg and travel 13 billion years into the past, when the first stars were born. The Silk Road is a new exhibit I haven’t seen yet- but might be worth a look.

Through April 4: Tales from the Land of Gullah
Step into the world of the Gullah people—West African slaves brought to plantations on isolated islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina in the 17th century—and discover how they held on to their songs, stories, and customs. Find out about common nursery rhymes and children’s songs like “Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore” the Gullah gave to American culture, catch shrimp and crabs with nets, plant okra in the garden, learn to tell Gullah time, and much more.

Wollman Rink in Prospect Park (November 26 – March 14, 2010)
Last year, I finally made it to this rink on closing day. Talk about procrastination! It is a fine rink for teaching small children, but don’t expect to do any jumping or fast skating here. It is small and crowded but pretty gentle for the little ones. We even made a few friends while we were there. The lockers are free but bring your own padlock. The skate rentals were easy and the personnel were pleasant. Check hours on the site. Every Friday: ½ Price Admission! (does not include skate rental charge, holidays excluded). Adults: $5 (ages 15 and up) and Children (ages 14 and under) and Seniors: $3. Skate Rental: $6.50 (tax included). For more info like hours go to their site.

Saturday, February 20, 21st: various times: Robin Hood: Prince of …Monsters!
The Brooklyn Lyceum and Mainspring Collective perform Robin Hood: Prince of …Monsters! for ages 5 years and up. The show has a nice, manageable running time of 30 minutes. “There’s something funny happening in Sherwood Forest. The evil Zorlan Morlan has used his magic to turn Robin Hood into a big old scaredy cat, and transform his band of Merry Men into a band of Merry…MONSTERS! It’s up to 12-year- old Benjy Bleeglehorn, and her dashing sidekick Bravo, to enter the story and turn Robin Hood back into his old self again- by teaching him what it means to be a hero!”

Saturday, Feb. 20th, 10:30 AM: Storytime at Greenlight Bookstore
Spend a winter morning at Greenlight Bookstore in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn in the back of their store. It’s a cute way to meet other families and browse for yourself! Greenlight bookseller Eleanor shares two of her favorite tales with young book lovers: Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon and If You Give A Pig A Pancake.

Saturday, February 20th: 11 am and 2 pm: Lunar New Year Parade and Dance Performance in Flushing
The Flushing celebration might be less crowded than the New Year parade in the city-though never having been to either as of yet, I can’t be sure. Check out the parade’s dragon floats, dancers and fireworks. Afterwards, head to Flushing Town Hall to see a performance hosted by the NY Institute of Culture and Arts. Feast your eyes on a sampler of dance performances from Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Saturday, February 20th: 1-2:30 pm: Walking tour of Chinatown
Lunar New Year is the liveliest and most important celebration in Chinese culture and Chinatown is the place to experience it! MOCA’s walking tour takes visitors through Chinatown to learn about holiday traditions and customs observed by Chinese households. Witness how the neighborhood transforms itself in preparation for the New Year and discover the characteristics that make this holiday unique.

Saturday, Feb. 20th and Sunday, Feb. 21st: Brooklyn Behemoth Book and Media Fair
People start lining up for this event in the frigid February morning around 7:30, and as soon as Park Slope’s biggest book sale opens at 8:30 am, the entire church basement is packed by book lovers and bargain seekers. They come because there are thousands and thousands of new and used books, CDs, DVDs, videos and records to choose from, for all ages and interests, at ridiculously rock bottom prices. Whether you read contemporary bestsellers or classics of the literary canon, whether you need self-help or how-to, you’ll find it at one of Brooklyn’s largest book sales. There is an entire room devoted to children’s books! All books are sorted by genre, and everything is offered at extremely low prices. Books start at 50 cents each; hardcovers are only $2.00. Saturday, February 20th: 3 pm: The Journey of the Blues to NYC
The Blues evolved out of traditions such as African-American work songs, spirituals, and country string ballads more than a century ago, and its influence can be found in popular culture from jazz to rock and roll. Join Harlem’s legendary blues artist Keith “The Captain” Gamble and his ensemble on a journey through the rich history of the Blues as it made its way from the rural South to the Big Apple, complete with spoken word, horns, drums, and that sweet sound of the Blues, featuring songs from New York City Blues legends. Presented in celebration of Black History Month and in conjunction with Community Works.

Saturday, February 20 – Sunday, February 21: Kids Week at The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum presents its annual “Kids Week” which has a variety of programming including: visits by New York Red Bulls, Ringling Brothers, Rosie O’Donnell’s Rosie’s Broadway Kids, Dave and Busters, Madame Tussauds New York, Mr. Met, NASA, Old Navy, The Gap and others. There will be interactive exhibits provided by NASA and lots to do. For the most updated information, please visit www.intrepidmuseum.org. While you are there, don’t forget to stop by the exhibition of: Mission to Mars – Full-Scale Mars Rover Exhibition. The Exhibit presents a timeline of the American space program from President John F. Kennedy’s race to the moon speech to the current Rovers on Mars, and even introduces the next Mars probe, Curiosity,which will launch in March 2011. Special emphasis will be placed on the role that the USS Intrepid played while acting as a space capsule recovery ship for the Mercury 7 and Gemini 3 NASA missions.

Saturday, Feb. 20th and Sunday, Feb. 21st: 11 am – 5 pm: Beam Camp Inventgenuity Festival
This festival is as unique as its name. Presented by Beam Camp, the Brooklyn Inventgenuity Festival brings kids and their parents together with artists and big thinkers for a full weekend of hands-on building and making workshops and demonstrations. Girls and boys aged 6-17 and their parents can make amazing things out of electricity, fabric, wood, dirt, food and other materials, join in a signature Beam Camp Project, set individual and group World Records and learn the art of fixing common household objects. Scheduled presenters and instructors include the Fixers Collective, Steve Gerberich’s Flap-Pet Shop, Art Bots by Christian Cerrito, and hydroponic agriculture, presented by Brooklyn Farms. The event’s second day, Sunday, February 21 will also feature the Second Annual Brooklyn Kids World Record Day, hosted by the founders of the Universal World Record Database. Each participant will have a chance to set their own world record. Records set last year included Most Armpit Farts in 30 Seconds, Most Fake Mustaches Worn At Once, and Most Booty Shakes In One Minute. This year’s records promise to eclipse those in boldness and ingenuity. Additionally, a noteworthy group record will soon be announced. Advance registration can be done here. Admission is free.

Saturday, Feb. 20th: 10:30 am and 1:30 pm: Tribeca Cinemas Kids Club
The Tribeca Cinemas Kids Club features both feature length and short films, appropriate for all ages accompanied by an enriching activity tied to the film for kids and adults to enjoy, including question and answer sessions, arts and crafts, and live music – and only healthy snacks will be served! Morning screenings are geared towards a younger audience (3+) and afternoon screenings for slightly older children (7+). 10:30am – Abby in Wonderland (ages 3+). Post-screening activity: Come dressed as a magical creature and have fun with arts & crafts, dancing and give-aways! 1:30pm- Annie (ages 7+) Post-screening activity: Preceding the film an original cast member from the Broadway show will teach you some of the songs so you can sing along with the cutest red-head on the silver screen.

Saturday, Feb 20th and Sunday, Feb 21st: 10 am- 5 pm: Brooklyn Flea moves indoors to Ft. Greene
The Brooklyn Flea has moved to a winter location in the spectacular former Williamsburg Savings Bank at One Hanson Place in Fort Greene. The location is stunning with mosaic tiles lining the floor, mosaic murals with gold leafing and a vaulted ceiling. There are 100 vendors, including the beloved Red Hook food vendors. It’s fun to visit the vault downstairs were the majority of the food vendors are and then wander into the former executive offices, now occupied by craft makers. Though the aisles are wide enough for strollers, the stairs (up and down) are not stroller-friendly, though everyone helped me bring my stroller up and down the stairs. Saturday, February 20th: 1 pm: Sing and Dance at BPL
Kids aged 4 years and up can sing and dance to celebrate African-American heritage with Tammy Hall, a Tennessee native who sings yarns. Experience his magic as he journeys through Africa, U.S. and the Caribbean with his tales at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Saturday, Feb. 20th: 10:30-11:30 am: Building Blocks
Kids are invited hear “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” and learn about the structures of tall buildings. Using stacking blocks, kids will construct the sturdiest tower and recreate famous New York Skyscrapers. Ages 4-7. Saturday, Feb 20th: 11 am: The Fuzzy Lemons
Check out the Fuzzy Lemons, northern NJ’s family rock band. They get kids dancing with fun movements and activities and costumes (sometimes!).

Sunday, Feb. 21st: 4 pm: PS Children’s Storytime
This is my go-to event on Sundays if we are looking for something to do. The owner does a great job of assessing what age group he has in front of him and catering to that group. He also sings a bit too with the kids. Call to reserve with ages as he does like to prepare – but drop-ins are welcome too! Storytime is from 4 pm to 5 pm.

This parade is a colorful spectacle featuring floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dancers, antique cars, beauty queens, Asian & Hispanic musical performers, magicians and acrobats, and local organizations. This is the biggest winter parade in the East Coast and a national and international tourist attraction. Thursday, Feb. 25th: Drop-In Montessori Playgroup
Starting in late January, Still Hip has been offering two Montessori- based playgroups – one for children 18 months to 3 years, and another for children 3 to 6 years old. These playgroups are designed to introduce parents to the ideas and techniques used in Montessori classrooms, while introducing the children to specific Montessori materials which will teach them practical life, language, and problem solving skills.
