Foxy and Winston's interior shop- light and lovely!
You all know how fun it is to go to Fairway and Ikea and watch the boats, feed the gulls and jump in Ikea’s playspace, but this little Red Hook outing is a little more “Brooklyn boutique” along Van Brunt Avenue.
First stop: Foxy and Winston sells all screen printed goods from stationery to baby bibs. I missed going inside the white-washed interior as the owner, Julie, Jane is currently taking a “wee trip” to Norfolk and will be out of town until March 24th. I want to take a closer look at her art prints when she gets back. If you think you have seen Julie’s work before, you have: she showed at the Brooklyn Flea’s Gifted this past winter.

Would love to hang this in our bathroom
Second stop: Pop right next door to Tiburon- a boutique that sells an intriguing collection of handmade items. Owners Anne and Amy named it Tiburon after an awesome bodega on the corner of Van Brunt and Coffey
Streets, that made rad cheap sandwiches, never had any soda, always was showing a telenovela and sold 5 cent candy. we miss it so we named our store after it.” They too had “gone fishing” when I stopped by, but I can’t wait to try out that colorful hula hoop.

Tiburon! From hula hoops to a beguiling shark
Third stop: You don’t have to go farther then next door to Tiburon to check out some awesome boutique items for you and kid. Red Lipstick had some knit leggings I fell in love with and a head scarf that belonged on someone truly hip (not me.) Buy your nontoxic polish here and scoop up a handmade doll too. Hours are short and mostly in the afternoon, so check times before heading out.

Ready for a break and a snack? Just cross the street and park your stroller at either of the nearby family-friendly cafes of Fort Defiance Cafe and Bar or local fave Baked.

Fort Defiance's charming bar
Fort Defiance is a cozy cafe-bar that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Named after a fort that was built in Red Hook during the Revolutionary War in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Brooklyn, Fort Defiance is operated (and its bar is tended) by St. John Frizell, a food-and-drink writer. The kids might like the roasted turkey or meatloaf sandwiches or their brunch of Dutch Apple Pancake.

You can't miss the orange door and unique door handle of "Baked"
“Baked” is THE place in Red Hook to stop and get your morning pastry or one of their cupcakes, pies or brownies. You can’t miss in choosing anything from here. Grab a seat at the communal table and give your feet a break. Enjoy and let me know if you have any other “tips” for a Red Hook outing!

Oh, glad to hear about Fort Defiance — we will try it and let you know what we thought! Thanks!
Hello there,
Its Jane here – the owner of Foxy & Winston. Thanks so much for posting about my shop in your wonderful round up on Red Hook. I wonder if you would mind changing my name from Julie to Jane?
I am so sorry to have been out of town when you visited and hope to meet you next time you are in the area, Thanks so much!
Jane
Hi Melisa
Agree- Fort Defiance does seem snug and isn’t a place where there isn’t any room for the kids to “escape” to from the table. But the menu offered is easy to choose kid-friendly items from. Let me know what you think. GREATtip on the playground- I didnt’ know about it. Will try it out next time!
Awesome list, thanks! We are of course at Fairway, IKEA, and Baked all the time — have I seen you there?! — but there are other places here that we have not tried, so I’m psyched. Been wondering if Fort Defiance was kid-friendly enough to head to with my 5-and 3-year old along (it looks like a snug place, not always so easy with squirmy, loud ones), but sounds like maybe it is! One tip from me: Before or after Baked, we often head over to that big playground to the left of Baked right on Van Brunt, behind the school there. On weekends, we usually have it entirely to ourselves — it’s large, with very nice, new equipment and a track great for bike and scooter riding. Recommend it!
