The yummiest summer skin products (and they are safe too)

Summer is coming and that means you will need: sunscreen, lots of shampoo to get chlorine out, face wash for ice cream and nail polish for toenails. Ahh…summer!

I have become fastidious about what I put on our bodies: some (Papa Tree) would say neurotic.  I swipe all his toxic products in the trash when he’s not looking.  Gone, Barbasol Beard Buster, Gone! (Hazard Rating of 7!) I use the Cosmetic Database (Skin Deep) for all my research before I buy any beauty products.  The Cosmetic Database is put out by the Environmental Working Group.  It is an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products. Worried about your toothpaste? Makeup? Eye Cream? This is the place to find out what you are putting on your skin.  They have hazard ratings from 0-10. O being the best and 10 being the worst. My own personal rule is never to buy anything above a 3. So, after a lot of research on price and product, I hope you will find some items that you like.

Tip: You really have to be specific about choosing a product even if it is in the same line. For example, Aveeno Baby Wash and Shampoo Lightly Scented has a hazard rating of 2, whereas the Unscented version has a rating of 4. Go Figure! So, here are a few of my favorite things (la, la, la….)

My Choice Kids Buys

31x3dxiuhhl_sl160_Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo Lightly Scented 8 oz $5.79 Hazard Rating of 2 (I know, Surprise! Johnson and Johnson? This product is awesome. It lathers well, smells good and has the bonus of being both a wash and a shampoo. Nicely priced too.) 31s1jjhtwml_sl500_aa280_Jason Natural Cosmetics – Vitamin E Moisturizing Creme, 4 oz cream 5,000 IU $6.49 Hazard Rating of 3 (Surprisingly, a lot of the Vitamin E Creme out there aren’t so good for you. I like this one and use it for scars, bumps and rashes that won’t go away. Aquafor is awfully good for this too, but it always stains stuff, so I prefer this Jason creme.)

41ost3azvtl_sl160_TruKid 10007-3 Happy Face & Body Lotion Value Priced Bulk Set $19.99 Hazard Rating of 2 (I love TruKid. Even though the bottle is small, the lotion goes a long way! Plus they are the same Hazard Rating as California Baby, but MUCH less expensive) 31qq8prvjnl_sl500_aa280_TruKid Friendly Face Wash 8 oz Pump $8.99 Hazard Rating of 3 (We keep this on our bathroom sink and have  used it night and day for a year now. There is still 1/3 of a bottle left. This is a great value. This soap has never irritated our childrens’ eyes either so it’s great for morning scrubs to get the sleep out). 21ac80klt2l_sl500_aa259_TruKid Sunny Days Face Stick $9.10 Hazard Rating of 0 (This sunblock stick is half the price of California Baby’s. I have CB too, and it has lasted me 3 summers. It is a good product, but almost double the price of TruKid’s stick. It’s a nice stick, but not as creamy as CB, so it can be a bit rougher to roll on. However, for the price, it’s worth it to me.)

My Choice Adult Beauty Buys

21facffr9l_sl160_1Revlon Double Twist Base Coat And Top Coat .5 oz $6.99 Hazard Rating of 2 41vse8d88gl_sl500_aa280_pibundle-3topright00_aa280_sh20_1Giovanni Magnetic Restruxturing Conditioner, 8.5 fl oz Containers (Pack of 3) $21.02 Hazard Rating of 1 (I love Giovanni products. I usually get them at Costco, but the one I get there has a higher Hazard rating. I like this conditioner. It isn’t too heavy.) 41vse8d88gl_sl500_aa280_pibundle-3topright00_aa280_sh20_Giovanni Magnetic Energizing Shampoo, 8.5 fl oz Containers (Pack of 3) $21.95 Hazard Rating of 2 (I adore this gunmetal grey shampoo. It lathers well and has a meaty texture to it so you don’t have to use much to feel clean.)My

  1. I have to say that we just ran out of TruKidz sunblock stick and I am going to go through the pain of ordering online and waiting for it rather than going out to get California Babies sunstick- it’s just that much better I think ( and oodles cheaper!)

  2. These look like some excellent new skin care products to try for summer. Thanks for the information!

  3. I didn’t know that- so I’ll look for unscented- thanks!

  4. i’m on the same page….and it definitely becomes obsessive! i recently read that unscented is not the same as fragrance free, as the former doesn’t exclude masking agents that cover unpleasant odors.
