I had THREE emails this morning about big school scoops today!

ONE:
First, from Joyce Szuflita, our School Expert on the blog: “I heard a rumor and it has been confirmed by Allison Gaines Pell, Principal at the wonderful Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters Middle School in Ft. Greene that they have applied to the DOE for a grade extension to become a K to 8 program. ” To read the full school scoop on a possible new school in District 13, read Joyce’s blog post here.

TWO:
InsideSchools
sent out their Alert this morning about new elementary and middle schools that will be opening next fall. A few of them “are awaiting approval by the Panel for Education Policy (PEP) which is meeting tonight, March 23, and again on April 20. In addition, about 30 new charter schools will be opening.” To read about each of them in detail, visit their site.

  • In District 17, The New American Academy will offer trilingual instruction in English, French, and Spanish in “open” classrooms where 60 students will be taught by four teachers. In its inaugural year, this unzoned school will accept kindergartners and 1st-graders.
  • District 20 will get four new elementary schools to help alleviate overcrowding. PS 310, PS 971 and PS 264, all slated for new facilities, will each draw students from new zones carved out of areas already serving crowded neighborhood schools. PS 748 will accept students from across the district.
  • District 13 families will have a new option for middle school. The Fort Greene Preparatory Academy, located in Fort Greene,  is  a selective admissions school drawing students from across the district.
  • District 23 will be getting two new schools: Mott Hall Bridges Middle School will serve grades 6 – 8 while PS 747, A Great Start Academy will serve grades K – 5.

THREE:
This is from my friend Deb who has made finding out about schools, her second job: “The Greene Hill School has a new space in Fort Greene at 39 Adelphi.  The new space has eleven large bright classrooms, a large flexible auditorium area and play yard, it is a wonderful long-term space for Greene Hill.  The new space will enable them to have a 3/4s program starting in September 2010 which will be in addition to their programs for K- 2.  The tier structure for the 3/4s will be similar to that for older students.   Families who are interested in the program may apply for a financial assessment through FACTS to see if there is a need for paying less than full tuition.
