Ad Hoc Mom sent out an email tonight suggesting that we all band together to demand the right to paid maternity. AHM is right, we have strong voices: let’s make them heard. Tonya, one of the three founders of AHM, wrote this letter:
Dear All,
Regardless of political or religious beliefs, I think it is BEYOND important for us to come together and demand the right to PAID maternity leave. I know way too many women who have had to use their sick and vacation pay to care for their newborn baby. And we all know it is NOT a vacation nor our we “sick” by the usual definition.
It saddens me that, while insurance companies consider a c-section a “pre-existing” condition, the US Federal Government has yet to put into place any sort of pay policy? Sure, we can’t lose our jobs but what about the much needed income. Should giving birth to the next generation of Americans be seen as a “luxury”?
As one little gal I can’t do much but I’m hoping that if you send out this link to any and all women you know or put it as a link on your Facebook page, blog site, whatever, we can change the system. If we demand, in a LOUD, COLLECTIVE voice, we will be heard!
Thank you so much.
All my best,
Tonya
PS. To my mother-in-law: You have a lot of friends and I know you want a another grandchild…do the math
