The ice cream cart at General Greene

You know that it’s officially hot out when the General Greene ice cream cart is back in action!  Greene Ice Cream is owned by Nicholas Morgenstern, former pastry chef of Gramercy Tavern and current owner/chef of The General Greene. All ice cream is concocted on site at The General Greene, in Morgenstern’s ice cream laboratory. Today I spotted it for the first time serving up tasty sweet treats for the 2010 season.  For those unfamiliar, the General Greene is located at 229 Dekalb ave (corner of Dekalb and Clermont) in Fort Greene.  Last summer the ice cream cart upstaged it’s namesake restaurant in fame by offering tasty flavors such as “Salted Caramel Pretzel” and “Bourbon Raisin”.  There are 6 available flavors at any time and they rotate from a list that ranges from the standard (vanilla, chocolate) to the totally unique (peanut butter bacon banana, butterscotch black pepper).  As their site states, “Fort Greene’s favorite flavor seems to be salted caramel pretzel, which is always available at the cart, as its absence from the rotation has been known to incite anger. ” So stop by and check it out – and by the way, members of the Fort Greene Park Conservancy can partake in a buy 10 get one free offer!
