Lisa Lobue Salon Photo by: Paula Balzer of Adhocmom.com

We were getting ready to fly to Wisconsin for a family wedding with my daughter as a flower girl so she needed to look extra cute.  I had made an appointment for myself at the Lisa Lobue salon on Fifth Avenue and 13th street where I’ve been going for cuts and color since my daughter was born over two years ago. After becoming a mother I decided that not only could I no longer afford $150.00 haircuts, but I just didn’t have the time to go into Manhattan. But I had forgotten to make an appointment anywhere for June.  Rather than try my luck at our usual kiddie salon and potentially waste precious packing time, I dragged her along and hoped for the best.  June ended up getting a great haircut, and major bonus, it was much cheaper than I normally pay and I saved myself a trip too.

Lisa Lobue is a fourth generation hairstylist, mother of two, and Park Slope native.  Her salon is friendly, affordable, accommodating and perhaps the biggest compliment I can give Lisa is that I no longer tell her what I want other than simply saying “different or the same as last time” – I trust her that much.  I’ve let her cut my hair from very long to very short, change the color, and give me a completely different style. At this point, she knows what I want more than I do.

June doesn’t especially enjoy having her haircut, so I was worried about how this would go without the videos, boxes of toys and fire truck to sit in.  Turns out I had nothing to worry about.  June happily played in the miniature toy salon Lisa has set up for kids that I had never noticed on previous visits.  When it was time for her haircut she was given a lollipop and a big basket of toys and all was well. We’ll definitely be planning more mother/daughter haircut outings in the future.

For those of you who don’t have time to get your hair done, the salon is open until midnight (by appointment) on Thursday nights and until 10pm on Fridays.

  1. Well, I went and was charged $25 for each of my two kids – not $15. I’d definitely recommend Le Chandelier on 5th Ave at Garfield or LuLu’s over the service received at Lisa Lobue. Granted it was late August and nearly everyone’s on vacation (including Lisa Lobue apparently), but the stylist took two lengthy phone calls in the middle of my cut and made other calls between my kids’ cuts while we waited for her. There’s a limit to the patience of two kids and a mom in a hair salon while the one stylist makes her arrangements for next week on her blackberry. And then to be charged the same as a full service salon… we won’t be back.
