Joyce Szuflita, our School Expert on the blog wrote in to tell us about some encouraging information. The DOE Round 2 Directory is up today (7/19) and some of the most popular neighborhood schools still have some seats available. Get ready for Round 2!

The Deadline for application submissions is 7/30/10 and offer letters will be sent out in late Aug. Families who receive an offer should contact the school to confirm that particular school’s first day of prek. Families receiving an offer should pre-register at the schools from Sept. 8 to Sept. 17.

You can submit an application online and you will be notified of the results online as well as by US mail.

The same lottery priorities apply; siblings attending the school will get first crack at the places, then in zone families, then out of zone but within the district etc.

Some popular neighborhood schools still have quite a few seats available. What happens in the first round is that only the exact number of seats is offered. If families move or decide to decline the seat then those open spaces go to Round 2. Even very popular programs can be left with seats and most all of your favorites are here. Only you can determine whether the program in the schools that I have listed is right for you, and I am being pretty random in my mentions – there are many, many other good programs that I don’t mention.

In District 13 there are a lot available but PS 282 with 72 classroom spots and 323 families trying for them still has 17 seats available. The lovely PS 133 which is waiting for its new building a little further north to be finished is spending a couple years on 7th St. and 4th Ave. They have 6 seats available. There are lots more in every neighborhood including PS 8 which has 2 seats.

The same is true in District 14. Popular PS 132 has 5 full day seats available. PS 34 has half day seats in both the morning and afternoon classes, and my old favorites PS 110 and 196 have 5 and 11 respectively.

In District 15 where the numbers of applicants are always high there are also seats. The papers reported that the 54 seats at PS 29 were all filled by siblings but the directory says that there are still 2 seats available there for round 2. PS 58 with four classrooms still has 7 seats and even PS 321 which had 475 applicants for its 12 (count them 12) seats has one vacancy.

It is not over until it is over. Good luck to all.

Joyce Szuflita is holding an introduction to Nursery School talk at Hootenanny Art House on Aug. 16 from 10am to noon – with other dates in Williamsburg and Bococa coming soon.
