- Greenbelt Nature Center in Staten Island- a place for a square dance? Why, yes!
Charles, our Music Listings Editor and Music Reviewer, manages to find the best and most interesting music events for us ALWAYS. And, this weekend is no different.
Have a dinosaur nut? Check out Rocker Rex and his 7 foot dinasour Rock on Friday morning. If classical music is more your style, bring a picnic and enjoy a concert on the big lawn of the Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum with New York City based cellist, composer, songwriter, and singer Emily Hope Price. Brooklyn Bride Park is continuing its international celebrations at Pier 1: this weekend they are featuring Haiti. You can also pick up a glass of wine at the newly beer/wine licensed Brooklyn Bridge Wine Bar that opened last week. And, last but not least as Charles asked, ” Okay. Did you know that there’s a giant 2,800 acre part on Staten Island? This is a great chance to get familiar with one of my favorite family activities– square dancing. Add that with barbeque, take a pony ride and games and you’ve got a winner.”
Friday July 30th
10:30 am: Thaddeus Rex
Enjoy an interactive show with Rocker Rex and his seven-foot-tall dinosaur friend, Rock. The songs do actually rock and Rex and Rock know how to put a show that get kids and families involved.

6:30 pm: Sunset Jam on the Hudson
I’ve been curious about how the kids would feel about a drum circle. A drum circle at sunset seems an ideal way to introduce them. There will be master drummers to teach basic patterns or just let the kids tire themselves out so they sleep late on Saturday.

11:00 am: Kidz Bop Kids Concert
Somehow I’ve missed out on Kidz Bop. As far as I can tell Kidz Bop consists of kids singing more or less current top 40 songs. Not very original but clearly popular and these kids can sing.

11:00 am: Family Picnic Concert Series: Emily Hope Price
A concert on the big lawn of the Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum features New York City based cellist, composer, songwriter, and singer Emily Hope Price. Guests are encouraged to bring food and drinks for a family picnic!

2:00 pm: Moona Luna
Moona Luna is kind of a kid/family-friendly version of the amazing Latin-Alternative group Pistolera. The music is happy, honest, and irresistibly dancey. An accordion in the hands of someone that knows how to use it is very powerful instrument. Moona Luna sings in Spanish and English and Sandra Velasquez is a wonderful performer who will get you up and moving.
