Sample Full Share for Red Jacket Orchards CSA
It seems we get more and more CSAs and food co-ops every year- and I’m thrilled (See our earlier post about CSAs in Brooklyn). What isn’t there to love? Great fresh food, community support, good prices and eating local. It’s especially welcome news that one of my favorite green market stands, Red Jacket Orchards, is starting a stand-alone fruit CSA this August. Bay Ridge Food Co-op is celebrating their 1 year anniversary and it seems Fort Greene/ Clinton Hill’s Food Co-op is getting closer to an actual location. Finally, two innovative Brooklynites have started a website that lists all the local food and wine shops and their daily specials and events. Want to know the soup of the day or the veggie special of the day? Check NonaBrooklyn!
A NEW FRUIT CSA
There is a new fruit CSA that will be run by Red Jacket Orchards from August to November. Fruit CSA shares in the city are currently additional product shares of vegetable CSAs – you must be a member of a vegetable CSA to partake in the fruit share; this is not the case for the Red Jacket Orchards Fruit CSA. They are completely independent of any vegetable CSA. Red Jacket Orchards Fruit CSA will provide a week’s worth of fruit to their members, in addition to apple sauces, jams and fruit juices. They will distribute out of the Brooklyn Farmacy in Carroll Gardens. Membership applications are due August 5th.
Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain
513 Henry Street, Brooklyn (Carroll Gardens)
Corner of Henry Street and Sackett Street.
Cost
Full Share: $264 ($22 per week)
Half Share: $156 ($13 per week)
a $10 administrative fee will be added to the share price. This fee will go towards next year’s CSA to help create subsidized shares for low income members.

BAY RIDGE FOOD CO-OP HAS A FAMILY STYLE PARTY TO CELEBRATE
The founders of the developing Bay Ridge Food Co-op will commemorate the organization’s ‘birthday’ with a potluck picnic of local food on Sunday, August 1st that will include activities and membership drive. The picnic will take place at Shore Road and 79th Street from 12 pm to 4:00 pm. Entry is open to all who want to have some fun, and learn more about the Bay Ridge Food Co-op. As well as celebrating the anniversary of the inception of the Bay Ridge Food Co-op membership campaign, the event will highlight the New York State Locavore Challenge, which aims to persuade individuals to make a commitment to eat only locally and sustainably produced food during the month of September. All those attending the Potluck Picnic are encouraged to use local foods, and there will be a competition to find the ‘most local’ dish of the day!
The event will feature a kids’ balloon toss, tug-of-war, and a kickball game, among other activities. Participants are asked to bring food that uses locally-sourced ingredients wherever possible, and that can last several hours in heat. Participants should also try to bring chairs and blankets, and bathing suits for kids to use in the nearby sprinklers. Coolers will be made available for chilled food items (space will be limited), and attendees are asked to provide their own utensils and dishes. Any and all musicians welcome to come and make merry!
About the Bay Ridge Food Co-op : For those interested in learning more about the Co-op, info sessions take place at the Bay Ridge Library at 73rd St and Ridge Blvd on the 1st Thursday of every month at 6:30pm, as well as on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 10:30am. If you’d like more information about this topic, or to speak with one of the event’s organizers, please call 347-274-8172 or email [email protected]. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter and Meetup.
NONABROOKLYN
NonaBrooklyn is a super cool concept: get food and drink updates from your favorite Brooklyn bakers, butchers, brewers, restaurants, shops, bars and farmers selling at local farmers markets. NonaBrooklyn is basically like a major super internet highway sidewalk chalkboards that restaurants, shops and bars use to promote daily specials.
One update that interested me in particular: Head to Stinky Bklyn (261 Smith Street Brooklyn, New York ) 11231: Luke will take you through an hour and a half flight with discussion and hijinks. In the garden weather permitting.
